Projects 33 Ford 5 window coupe build - 50's style

That would be great if you could post some pics of how you mounted the generator. That is one of the things left to work out on this build. Thanks for any info you can provide.

The coupe is sitting up on the hoist waiting for brake lines and exhaust to be installed - will hopefully get to that next month. Other projects, some of the non-car kind, are taking my time these days.

 

Back working on this long time project - too many other projects have got in the way. Here are pics of the dash and the exhaust system - working now on installing the glass. More pics to come.

Deuce Shell makes it, in the 50's there were no 33's if you got one the first thing you did was put a 34 grill shell on it, but my favorite 34 had a deuce shell like yours, you're on to something.

The reaction to the 32 grill shell has been mostly negative, guys think I should run a 33 grill.
But I'm with you John, they used Deuce grills back in the day on channeled 33-34 Ford coupes, and I have always liked the look they provide. So the 32 shell stays!

 

Your doing a excellent job on your '33 Five Window Project. Build your vision since it is your time and money.

A 27 Whippet shell would look really good, nod nod wink wink.

 

Ron, you know a Whippet grill is not going to work on this coupe, but would look great on an old speedster. Someone out there needs it for their build.

 

Here is the deuce grill shell ready to be installed. Was shortened 4 inches many years ago, I am told in the early 60's - was on a Model A roadster. The insert needs some work but will be used in this project.

 

Got a working cowl vent now, finally put the pieces together. The white you see here is the back side of the dash - makes it easier to see behind there when everything is assembled - a little trick I came across many years ago.

 

Hamber Duncan supplied the drag link, and he reamed the opposite side of the 35 Ford pitman arm so that the tie rod end could be mounted to provide clearance for the radius rod. There is nothing that beats rodders helping each other out!

 

The main reason I love the '33-4 Ford is the beautiful streamlined grille so I honestly never understood putting the deuce grille on them. In my opinion the style came about on the east coast because the deuce coupe was so iconic... if you couldn't find a deuce you put the '32 grille on a '34 but that's just a guess....anyway looking at the picture of this car I suddenly realized my major objection had always been that most of the '50's cars put the '32 grille/rad way out in front of the crossmember and many compounded the issue by using spring in front axles creating a tractor like appearance especially when the headlights are placed way back....when placed in the right position in relation to the front axle/headlights it looks really cool.... but no longer '50's east coast style

 

Nailhead A-V8 - you described it perfectly. To look right on a channeled 33-34 Ford coupe, the deuce grill should be in line with the front axle and headlights. Have seen too many that are mounted forward of the axle, and to me that does not look right. On a channeled coupe, it also helps to have a sectioned grill shell. Thanks for the comments and observation!

IMO... when you remove the hood the grill doesn't hide the ugly sides of the radiator... that is why I ran the chopped '32 shell on my '33 fiver...
IMO... a '32 shell on an A was because the '32 radiator upper tank peaks forward, the A shell was not,
if you ran a flattie you needed the '32 rad. and of course it's shell...

 

Got the "Tanks" gas tank installed in the trunk and vented through the floor. Need to get a sender and install the gas line next. The ammo box will be the battery box. Also putting in the glass now, here is the rear window done.

Thanks, Ron. Got some red oak installed so all the wood pieces are now in place. Put the original woodscrews back in place, always keep that type of thing just for this purpose. Slowly but surely this build is coming together - on to the rest of the glass next, then the headlights and taillights.......

Steve hit right on the main reason for using a '32 grill on a 33/34, that has been channeled OR sectioned. When you lower the body, you need to lower the grill to match. After you stuff a 33/34 grill 5" or so closer to the ground, they are dangerously close to the pavement and tend to look longer than normal maybe even out of scale to the body. The '32 shell is about and hour or so worth of cutting and welding. Can you imagine sectioning a 33/34 grill???? There's a few in magazines and they can look kinda "off" as well. Sure wish I had put one on my cabrio. Tim
