I don't do any business, other than a credit card. with large banks. My local bank knows me by name and by sight and they notify me of any transaction, in or out, that is >$100.

Besides the Nigerian Prince story- I got a new one today........ Have something on CL. The same old story= My add says wont respond to texts, and only call if serious. Well...... Goes like this- Hi. I'm interested in your item. (FLAG) Like you cant even mention it= Dumb***...... (FLAG), and the funny part is, wait for it= I'm an Oceanographer for the Discovery channel, and out at sea. I will send someone to pick up the "ITEM". Really? It's a F'N bicycle......
Sorry to the OP, to have gotten taken, and put trust, BUT, DAMN!
.45's aren't all that expensive....... So come pick it up there sir! And while your here, bring some fish pictures.....
They will never stop, as long as "we" as a group let it continue..... Jeeze!

Sometimes I don't mention the item by name when I am interested in the item and I do say "I am interested in your item".

How is this a red flag again?

If it's a widget= Wouldn't you say so? Plus I have several items listed. How am I , or anyone to know what you might be interested in? And there's no specific questions.... Like you''ll just take everything I say as gospel and run with it? If you don't see red flags with all the nonsence, then your a patient man.....But- I had stated no texting, which is what I got...... I stick to my guns, and won't play the modern day easy way out. I don't have fire sales, and surely don't play by others rules........ If you cant heed instructions, well...... No dice.

If there are multiple items listed then, yes, I would say which item I am interested in. If it is only one item, no, I will call it "your item". Your post did not say anything about multiple items.
Some people will text if there is a phone number available even if you say "no texts". I don't want to burst your bubble but people will do as they please. If you don't want texts then you don't put a cell phone number as your contact number.

To tell everyone not to call unless you are a serious buyer? Maybe someone might need some info on your item before they make up their mind and so what if they don't buy the item. At least you know the item is being looked at. If they call then they are a serious buyer. Sometimes the seller has to play by the buyers rules. Since when are there rules for buying some ones items? I never seen a pamphlet published with rules put out by anyone for buying items from the internet sellers.

Dave, try listing a "'36 bendover" on CL, describe it as "one of a kind, get's great milage, only needs paint"

Then come back and let us know your replies;)

You'll get I like your item"...or I am interested in your "36 bendover"...copied and pasted into their reply.

    Have fun.....

Not seeing who can piss farther, but- You have to put contact info if you want to sell, right? S0- I'de rather forego the call if serious, and put it out there, VS any jack*** who want's to play e-mail tag. What would you prefer? Doesn't matter how many item's I have or not. And hell yes- my items are described to the fullest and then some.If your not literate, and have zero questions, then your scam o rama. If I called you- better yet- if I texted you when you said NO texts, had no questions what so ever, and used off calliber vocabulary, like- i'll take your item, and send my guy, wouldn't that raise your eye brow a lil? Done here with this. No need to bicker. See it your way. I make no excuses to sell, and try my hardest not to get taken, and that's being smart. Results greatly vary......

  9. I don't know if I told this scammer story before. When I was looking for a motor and trans for my 56 Buick wagon.I had a guy that said he had a good motor and trans and I could have them for $500.What a deal Hu? He even sent me a picture of the 56 Buick they were going to come from. It was a beautiful car. I asked him why he would pull a motor and trans from such a nice car. He said his wife had cancer and needed the $$$.1st red flag. Now this guy said he lived in a certain town in Texas and would have it all ready to ship after I sent him the money. 2nd red flag. I said wow I have a brother in law that lives in the next town over give me your address and I will have him come over and look at it after you pull it out. I NEVER heard from him again. Guys you have to be CAREFUL out there. Its YOUR hard earned $$$ those lazy *******s are after. Thanks Bruce. HPIM2053.JPG

If I have more than one ad out there and you state "Your item" how am I to know which item you're referring to? Get real and let us, the seller, know you're a real potential buyer not a scammer. If you used Craigslist much you'd understand about all the dumb ***es out there and how much time they can spend trying to screw you over. When I get a m***age that doesn't sound right I delete it and forget it

I sell a lot on craigslist. I don't whine because someone calls my stuff "your item". Calling something "your item" does not make them a scammer. I use the term a lot. Does that make me a scammer? Why didn't read what I said before posting on it? "Reading is fundamental"

Yes I read your post entirely. DID you read mine? I said IF I have more than one ad out there how am I to know what you're referring to. I don't whine about calling something my item, but it is a term a lot of scammers use and many times their asking "Is this item still available" within minutes of you listing it. So you handle your sales the way you want and I'll tend to mine

I got a call from a friend the other day saying he got a call from a fella in Texas selling a car cheap.....he p***ed the info onto me, thought I'd be interested. I called the number and an older fella picked up ,,,I could hardly understand his twangy accent.

Tells me an old estate is selling a bunch of cars and there's a 32 3 window, running and driving with a v8 flathead for $1,800.....RED FLAG!!

Says I need to wire the money and he'll secure the car for me! I hung up.

Agree completely, but a least you know exactly where the problem is. Have found PayPal to be very accommodating.
A bigger problem here is someone following the UPS/Fedex truck around and watching them leave something on a doorstep, waiting to be sure no one is home then helping themselves.

Yes that is a problem here as well. A friend of mine was hit a few months ago so he installed cameras aimed at his porch. He got hit again and the guy waved at the camera on the way out. No, they could not identify him.

  17. Last year I had several packages left on my door step by the USPS person. Stopped by the post office and filed a complaint ( That really made me feel warm and fuzzy ) knowing that they will investigate this ( NO ) I set up several game cameras around the front of my house. The thievery stopped. I did find out that the neighbor across the street kicked her 30 year old son out of the house. He left the neighborhood and has not been back since. If I did see him on my camera then he is dead meat. Non of the neighbors will have to deal with him nor would his MOMMY again .

    Works every time......
Newbies with no posts or a couple.... Ask them what they do for a living.
I'm sure it's some **** and bull story.

Then share with them that you are with NORAD.

If they ask them what's that ?
    Tell them to Google it.

Satellite to location......PC or mobile tracked anywhere in the world.

    They go away....

    Or legit guys stick around.

Yes. I see what you are saying and I agree. I get the same on my CL postings. I block their numbers and it has cut down on the scammers a lot. One will slide under the radar once in a while. But not all who say "your item" are scammers.

I don't particularly like "I'm interested in your item" in a response either. I'd expect a response from a legit buyer to be something like : are the valves still in the heads or do they go with the heads? What are the numbers so I can look them up? Do you have a paypal account?
I would also google the guys name and see if it shows up in the town he's in or if anything else shows up. It might not completely stop the scamming but it may reduce the chances of it.
Just about everybody I know has been scammed at one time or another at something including myself. Its still upsetting hearing about it.

So a year or so ago I had an item on craigslist . A guy replied and we were trying to check each other out . I told him I was on facebook ,very real and ready to do a deal . He emailed me the next day and said he checked my facebook ,he called me a radical republican ,over the hill loser ,trouble making ***hole and said he wouldn't meet me if the stuff was free. Maybe I shouldn't have gave him my facebook name.I really wanted to sell that 4 speed to him.

  23. Put some aluminum wheels up on Craigslist some time ago. Tells me he is on an oil platform off of Croatia (red flag). Wants me to ship the wheels to Kansas City (red flag). I said nope, not until I had money in my hand. Then he wants to know shipping (red flag). I work up an estimate. Too much and I don't hear from him for a couple of weeks. Then he tells me to take the wheels to his brother here in Jonesboro. Says his brother will pay for the wheels when I deliver them. Sceptical, I run the number and address and it turns out his brother is a well known dentist here in town. I take the wheels over and the receptionist knows all about it. Tells me where to put the wheels and hands me an envelope with the right amount of cash in it. Not all scammer looking offers are from scammers but you need to be careful.

I have been reading this thread for several days, and an idea just occured to me after all the back and forth about texting:
How about putting in the ad to text you his location and a 3-4 hr. time frame in which you can call him at that land line only number? I'm sure somebody can come up with a method to shoot a hole dead center in my idea

These scammers are making it hard for those of us living overseas to buy parts. I understand everyone must be cautious to not get ripped off, but not everyone buying parts from overseas is a scammer. To make matters worse, I am actually an offshore oil and gas worker who was also working overseas (South Korea). Try explaining that and not sound like a scammer !!
