I found about a can and a half of Glasurit paint that is about 38 years old. I opened up the can that is half full and it looks amazingly in good shape.
I've been searching online and I can't seem to find any information on this paint. I'm trying to figure out if it's still good, if it's a single stage or not and how would I go about getting another can. Any help is highly appreciated. [IMG][IMG][IMG]

Lacquer is good as long as it is still liquid. It can be polished directly but several coats of clear give you some cushion against burn through.

I seriously dought you'll be able to get another can, I'm sure Glasuret discontinued lacquer years ago. All lacquer was considered single stage, you could clear over it but didn't have to.

It's still good as has been said. The sadness in all this is that you only have about 3 1/2 qts once reduced in 'ready to spray' mode (150% reduction). If you like the color and want it as a final finish you can base it with something close then finish with that. Then again that only leaves you 2 1/2 read to spray because you'll need to hold some back for touch up if ever needed. If you have good commercial supplier they can make that color for you but just imagining the price is frightening:eek:

The color is iberischrot . The year 1971 VW paintcode is L31F. Probably $500 a gallon in today's base coat.
You might be able to use it with a modern polyurethane clear coat. Spray it let it cure well, sand it with 600 grit and clearcoat it. MAYBE http://www.ratwell.com/technical/GlasuritPaint.html

Paint must lighten up with reducer? Looks so dark compared to my car.

No, it shouldn't lighten up with reducer. I take this paint is left over from when they painted the car? Your car faded maybe?
Curious, what do you want to use this paint for? touch up or a total refinish?

The word "nitro" on the label indicates to me that it is nitrocellulose lacquer which was dropped when acrylic lacquer was developed.
Handle it just like acrylic. Probably a little more brittle than acrylic and may not retain "shine" quite as long as acrylic.
It color sands and buffs easily. Thin with high quality slow lacquer thinner. Avoid spraying during humid conditions.
Doesn't get any more traditional than that.

I need to refinish the whole car. I had a guy paint it and "ford red" matched exactly to frame and body. He didn't paint under the car and you can't tell a difference between old and new paint tints. This can came from the builder. I got the car after dad passed and his dad had it built in 1980 from magoo. It's just odd if this can doesn't go to this car.

Why not just spray it? What do you have to lose?

  14. I can tell you for a fact that I used unopened cans of Glasurit paint that had sat for 28 years on my BMW and it came out beautiful. Especially when parked next to other, more modern mixes. I was totally thrilled. Try it on a test panel of course.

Here the headlight mount area. The dark is from paint can, beside that is "ford red" engine enamel and outside of that is supposedly "ford red" auto paint

Not sure where your going with this but spraying will be a different color than brushing.

Sorry thought I was clear with my destination on this color thing.. I wander with my explanations sometimes, now I know why she's always pissed at me. Hehe.
I'm trying to figure out if this paint in this can is the same paint that's on my car. It's from the builder and it came with the car but a lot darker. I will have to bring in a front panel and the can to the local supplier. I almost have to miss work to go in there. They have bankers hours.

I used Glasurit exclusively for 3-4 years, starting in the late eighties. Ford Motor Co. was also using it, and it was really good, durable stuff, in the urethanes. I have never seen their lacquer before, and hope you let us know how it does for you, if you use it.
Here are some names for some reds Ford used; Rangoon Red, from around 1960, Candy Apple Red, from '66 or so, and Bright and Dark Canyon Red, from sometime in the '80's.

  22. We shot tons of Glasso lacquer back in the 70's There was a large VW dealership nearby and we did all of their used car work. Like the name suggests, it went on like glass, very often requiring no color sand, just a cut and buff. Great stuff

I didn't get into the game before the eighties but I think they called those cans of paint "factory packs"

Too bad I can't get another can so I'd have enough to shoot my car.

Actually, I can't use it. I'd have to shoot my undercarriage also because it's darker.

I'm hoping for it to match the magazine that it's in. That's the only reason I'm not changing anything substantial. I would love to start fresh but trying to honor my dad and grandpa.

  28. Beautiful red. I specifically remember the rangoon red on the Fords. As a former owner of a car with red laquer paint, I can confirm from experience what everyone else has stated. I hope you can get s good match.

  29. Impossible.

There are so many variables in the photographic and printing process that it is nigh on impossible for a printed picture in a magazine to accurately match a an actual paint colour, either in a can or on a car. Ink on paper changes colour over time too.

You cannot take a magazine picture to a paint shop and ask to put it in the analyzer and expect it to spit out the formula.

You have to use best gusesstimates and factor in a million variables including the lighting conditions, camera settings etc. when the shots were taken. Not to mention colour tweaking done when the separations were done for the printing process.

    Good luck.

Edit: On the positive side, you have a can of real paint. Match that...?

Factory pack. Wow, forgot about that, yeah paint stores use to sell the more popular colors pre mixed from the factory, as a painter we always tried to get factory packed, would match better.
To the OP. Those cans of paint are cool but sounds like no one knows if it is really left over from your car. The builder might of thought they were but...
I wouldn't get to hung up wanting to use it. I'd proceed on with the restoration how ever you would if you didn't have the paint. I'm confused though, you need to repaint the whole car but you already had a guy paint it Ford red?
If you do repaint the whole car, do you plan on doing it in lacquer?
