A few years back I put an MSD box in my Cad powered roadster using the points to trigger it, thought I'd cut a fat hog. The box only lasted 2 years and fortunately it failed just as I pulled out of the driveway. Rewired it back to original and it ran great. Never again will I be seduced by this hi-tech***** in a hot-rod.

Beautiful car and glad you were able to find the problem. Both my car and truck run with points and I have been very pleased with the performance and dependability.

Not an HEI expert, but I do carry a spare module with car, (have had one***** out) recently had a coil go bad, so now I also carry a spare coil, NOW, nothing will go wrong in ingnition as once a spare is available there will be no problems in that area. Through the years I have had several GM new/late model cars/trucks on a flatbed to a dealer, my old cars/hot rods have always got me home, a few times with a repair on the road, first flatbed trip for old stuff was our 51 Buick last year. Used to have a bumper sticker that covered these deals,***** HAPPENS ! Covers a lot of situation's. Agree ?

Runnin' 3 HEI's and all 3 have a spare module and rotor aboard. Had one module failure way back when.

having the right parts at the right time & place fairly rare- how many carry a spare coil, or are using the correct coil for system in use? carry fuel filter, spare tire & jack that can be used along side the road, etc?

How many guys carry spare parts for their DD? So why should you feel the need to carry them for your hot rod, unless you know that those parts fail regularly?

My DD is the one with the spare HEI module in the glove box :)

but if you drive a late model, and you've been driving for several decades, you probably know that they make new cars much more reliable than old cars.

Which is part of what makes driving old cars, so much more fun than driving boring new cars.

Exactly, that's why some of us will go with modern replacement items like HEI

heh...HEI is 42 year old technology, they're lower maintenance than points, but still not as reliable as what they are using on today's cars.

A few years ago, I was having what I thought were condenser problems with my Jimmy 302 engine in the Deerslayer. I would be running down the road and the engine would start to choke and die. I got pretty adept at drifting across several lanes of traffic with a dead engine in coasting mode into a parking lot. The condenser on this particular six cylinder distributor was mounted on the outside of the distributor and I could grab a spare out of the glove box and be back on the road again in less than five minutes. What I thought were bad condensers from south of the border turned out to be a bad wire in the distributor which was grounding out on occasion.

not surprising. The problem with modern condensers seems to be that they have a poor internal connection between the "guts" and the case. Same thing as a loose wire in the the system.
