Hello Hamb community, I am 17 and new to carburetors, and recently purchased what was advertised as a "650 CFM Holley Double Pumper-Four Barrel", now that I have the carb, I realize its not exactly a common one. The number stamped vertical on the side is "6r-4237B" the secondaries are huge, and the primaries are small by my (inexperienced) account. Best I can figure from my research is its made to replace the factory Q-Jet, but i cant find parts/Rebuild kit for it, or a whole lot more information than that anywhere.
Any information on tuning, where parts can be found, and general history of this damned thing will be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time.

P.S., What is that thing? ^ (dumb question I know)

Gavin... To identify these (Holley) carbs, read the number on the front of the air horn. (photo #3)
There is a small 'legend', starts with "LIST"...then some numbers.
I believe the 'lot' of that carburetor is a 'Spreadbore', called for the large secondaries...
But give us the 'list' numbers, please...

I hope you didn't pay much for it. That's one Holley 4bbl I would not mess with. Nothing but trouble, and I've had a few of them.

I've got one of those hanging on a nail in the garage where it has been the last 15 years. They were a bolt on replacement for a Quadrjet in the 70's and 80's but never did gain a big following. I think I got mine used for about ten bucks in the mid 80's. We ran it on a 307 in my son's 70 Chevy C 10 until I totaled the truck.

well, that might be where this one ends up, it seems like more trouble than its worth to try and get this old thing to work, much less maintain it.

anytime you find a 'rare' part, remember they made millions of them

They do sell carb kits for it. Just search for a kit for a 6210 Holley. As Jim or Mike said above all Holley carbs are referred to by the list number. They actually still offer those for sale. https://www.holley.com/products/fue...arburetors/emissions_replacement/parts/0-6210

This should be the kit. https://www.holley.com/products/fue...omponents/rebuild_kits/renew_kit/parts/37-605
OReilly's can get the kit and while a couple of bucks more than the others no freight. https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/...51/carburetor-kit/37605/4377514/1998/bmw/528i If you have order it though them tell them to bring it in on a stock order rather than special order.

I should note that while the actual list number is 6210-3 it is a 4165 series carburetor. There is a ton of info out there.

You have the mechanical secondary version of the Holley spreadbore.
The vacuum secondary version is more "common", but still not popular. The only one I've seen, I own.
Never saw a mech sec version.
I just bought a rebuild kit from Summit for the vacuum secondary version.
I like my vacuum sec version, it fits perfectly in place of a Quadra-jet.
Seems like the accelerator pumps would too big and too small at the same time.

Thank you, those are very helpful, honestly, this thread has already taught a considerable amount, and all input is appreciated. I suppose since I already have the damned thing, I'll try and get it to run.

Guess i'm a little slow on the uptake today, haha, sorry.

I've got a 350 chevy, 010 020 block with 4 bolts, bored .060, and an edelbrock streetmaster intake, was planning on sticking it on top of that (after i reassemble it)

Is it a spread bore intake?

I ran the one I have on a 350 in my truck at one time. It's pretty much junk now as we had a carb fire in the middle of Kansas on I 35 in 1989 with it. Still pulled 16 mpg in the 70 going to Texas though and pulled a cattle trailer back.

I had a spreadbore double pumper carb on a junk 307 in a 68 Corvette...put a QJ on it and felt a big time loss of torque/hp. With the Holley spreadbore it would roast the tires in 1st gear....with the QJ not so much. I like them in certain situations..

I ran one on a sbc 400, it was fun, but thirsty if pushed, worst I got was 8 mpg..
The only trouble I had was the bronze filter at the inlet blocked up while driving, took it out and had no problems after that..

If you take it apart, keep all the parts from each end totally separate and put them all back the way they are now, lol. Some big trucks had the idle circuit on the secondaries and you just run on to all kinds of strange variations of these things. If you get the metering block and other parts swapped from end to end it can be a nightmare.

if you play with the secondary air valve spring adjustment on a Qjet, you can probably get it to work like you want.

One terminal problem I had with the 6210 is that it would leak from the factory installed plugs in the float bowl housings. no way to fix that, really, since they are spun/staked in place.

I also seemed to get more mileage/driveability with the Qjet that replaced that one.

If you can make it work, go for it...I would not waste time on it. Some old carbs are worth fixing, others are not so much.

Same as any carb . Rebuild it correctly , new parts , no back fires and it will work like a champ . Backfire it one time , it's time for a power valve replacement ASAP .

    Again, thank you, everything helps.

  29. I've never owned or worked with one of these, but I'm getting the impression that this carb might be better suited for something with a lower ratio axle and a manual transmission. Or maybe an automatic with a looser than stock converter. Running it on a spreadbore intake should get you better results as well.

I have no intention of sticking an automatic on the end of this motor, but also good to know. same with the rear-end ration, although I don't know what this motor will end up in. I'll look into a manifold, thank you.
