It was rehabbed and re-opened in 2009...on fire as of last night due to teens and illegal fireworks:

    Hello,
Nice shot of the driver training program at the local HS in North Carolina. These 1957 Ford sedans were the mainstay of the driver training program back in Long Beach, CA from 58-61. When we were finished with the classroom movie screen class, then we were assigned to these cars during study hall period. Most of the teachers were really bad drivers and did not know a lick about cars or engines.

The car we were using got stuck a couple of blocks away from the school. We had to open the hood and see what was the matter. Everyone looked at me to fix it, as knowledge about cars was already spread throughout the school about "car guys." Who me? The fan belt came off and the car had started smoking. Luckily, Long Beach had a ton of auto parts stores all surrounding our downtown high school campus. Plus, there were car dealers just two blocks from our school on Atlantic Ave. We immediately walked to get a proper fan belt and walked back to put it on the empty pulleys. (no A/C back then) The teacher did have a small tool bag handy.

Of course, we got extreme, extra credit points for helping out the teacher and the stranded students. My "rep" as a car guy spread all over the school, again. Of course, teenage notoriety is always a great thing to have in our circles. Those cars and curriculum dropped out of the whole school system over the years. It was described as a non academic endeavor, so out it went.

Now, 56 years later this is what the local school district is doing for our current young drivers still in high school: (no longer part of the "educational curriculum" from the school district, but they have pawned it off on a private firm.)

    Hey Redland,

That is awful news. We drove right through that tunnel back when we were visiting Portland and the Columbia River Gorge...all the way out to Maryhill Winery and concert venue. We stopped off of the main road to see the waterfalls nearby and got back on the main road to the Bonneville Dam just up the way.

My wife said that whole drive out to the Maryhill area was one of the most beautiful drives we have ever taken. It compares to some of the coastal drives we have been on over the years. GREEN is the color.

That green is now going to be black for quite some time, so our sojourn up there next year will be put off for now. I guess we could drive on the other side of the Columbia River, like we did coming back from that far-out winery/concert venue.

  7. Apparently the historic lodge at Multnomah Falls has been saved!
Firefighters coated it with foam and sprayed water all night to save it, but it isn't over yet!
Stupid F'n teens shooting illegal fireworks started this latest fire! They need to be charged with arson as adults and go to JAIL!
I'm furious and heartbroken to see my home state of Oregon going up in flames, and almost EVERY fire was started by some idiot! In the HOTTEST summer ever!
The fire here in LA above Burbank was started by an "illegal campfire", likely by "homeless" living in the hills.
Homeless my ass, most are meth heads, they live right in Woodley Park in the Valley and all over in the hills. This is a tragedy.
