Victor Hugo Inn Laguna Beach, CA 1950's
The Victor Hugo Inn opened in 1938 in Laguna Beach, CA. It was gutted by fire in 1954, reopened, and finally closed to become the Las Brisas Restaurant in 1979.

Las Brisas Restaurant ocean view, cliff top restaurant
    Hello,

Nice photo of the old Victor Hugo Inn. It is now Las Brisas, a restaurant. Today, it is a fabulous place to take out of towners for lunch or dinner. A little on the expensive side, but the impression for those that have never seen it, is outstanding. We took several relatives from Oklahoma and Wisconsin to the Las Brisas and they could not get over the fact that we were sitting over the cliff with the ocean just out there, on a bright and sunny So Cal day.

The Victor Hugo Inn was a popular place, as was all of Laguna Beach. The summer time crowds flock to this city and it is a nightmare to drive from one end of the town to the other.

Back in the late 50’s and early 60’s the “Greeter” was the most popular local icon. This shaggy, long haired, older guy stood on the corner of Forest Avenue and PCH to wave to all of the people driving by in their cars. My mom thought he was a interesting looking person that acted strange. The teenagers used him as a target, throwing stuff at him as they drove by the waving hand.

At one time, my mom wanted to buy some beachfront property in Laguna Beach in 1953-54. (She had some profit from another property she sold.) She always liked that small cozy, beach town. It held the mystique of a home to many of the “Hollywood Stars” that wanted to get away from the crazy, Los Angeles scene. One of our favorites was Bill Boyd, better known as Hopalong Cassidy. He lived in South Laguna and passed away in 1972 during the time period, when my wife and I lived in Laguna Beach. Grace Boyd passed away many years later in 2010.

That beach front property scenario has been played many times over in our house. If my mom had her way back then, presently, we would be living on a cliff overlooking the ocean somewhere in Laguna Beach in a paid for house !!! The main reason that did not happen was that my dad had to work in downtown Los Angeles and that would have been a super long drive to and from work. (A 70+ miles of surface streets) So, Long Beach, it was…

The main similarity between a divorce suit and a tornado in the southeast US is that one way or the other, someone is going a lose a trailer.
