Technical Todays trip to the DMV

Hello,
Reservations are a must in all DMV offices. There is no reason to wait in a line without reservations. Sure, inside the DMV there will be multiple rows of seats even for the people with reservations, but what else are you doing? Just relax and check out all that humanity has to offer.

The AAA offices are pretty nice for most DMV stuff. Call ahead to see if you can get it done in their offices. But, once you walk inside, there are two people at the DMV windows. The receptionist (if there is not a long lineup behind you) take care of what she can for the DMV,too. Auto club has outstanding service, but you have to be a member.

It is worth it for free emergency tows/ roadside service/ batteries, etc, for the cost of a membership. plus those offices are never crowded. No waiting, no reservations required.

 

I dealt with the DMV in Ill-noise for too many years, mostly just AWFUL AWFUL MISERABLE PEOPLE to deal with. When we moved to Evergreen Colorado, the women in the local DMV were the most happy, pleasant people you could ever meet. I almost fell down when I asked my usual stupid questions and was actually helped with a smile. Should of left ILL-NOISE a long time ago, who da thunk? Mitch.

 

Can I do the root canal HRP?

 

The only appointments are for drivers test,everything else is stand or sit and wait for your number to come up,I was told this morning when I went back to get my tag the end of the month is the busiest time to visit the DMV.

Since I had all the paper work from yesterday,I walked in and handed the receptionist the information and she called over to the first window and I was in and out in less than 10 minutes this morning. HRP

Hi Bruce.You`re lucky on the $24.00 dollar tag fee.Over here in Campbell County,we have a wheel tax.Almost $70.00 bucks here.

Leo.I know Jefferson County has a wheel tax and they are right next to us. Sevierville had been fighting the wheel tax for years. With the taxs here they should. LOL. Bruce.

 

people speak about California appointments like it is some great thing... well if you are like me and wait til the last minute it sure isn't. the days of going to the DMV and taking care of business on the last day are over where I live. appointments only with a 3 - 4 week wait. I drove for a month with no tags and no license waiting for an appointment a few years back

1 good thing about NYS DMV is the online make an appointment reservation walk in at the assigned time and date wait no more than 10 mins to tag a vehicle and your out, the bad is the taxes will kill ya!

 

In New Hampshire you almost needed to take a day off work and go to DMV, this was a few years ago. I was thinking that I would just get out of work early and register my car. So on the way home from work I stopped just to see what time they did close. I was standing looking a the hours of operation when a NH state Trooper pull up and told me to get into the back seat. One think I do know, don't argue with these guys. So I hope in the back, knowing that I didn't do anything wrong. well the Trooper started reading my the riot act telling me how these people who work for DMV want to go home at the end of the day, just like I do. I sat and listen and answer his questions about where I park my car (in the parking lot). He was talking about blocking the parking lot and not letting the DMV people to leave. Told him that I was not sure what he was talking about, so we drove around to the employees parking lot and sure enough there was a car blocking the exit and the DMV people standing around. I told him that is not my car, my car was out in the front. What happen is some guy went in to register his car, got to the counter and the DMV lady told him that he needed something else. So he went out to his car to get it and while he was getting the required paperwork DMV closed for the day. He knock on the door, and wanted them to open up so that he could get the paperwork that he left on the counter. They would not open the door or even hand him back his paperwork. He park his big Ford LTD wagon across the exit and the DVM people called the State Police. I ended up taking the next day off from work to registered my vehicle.

 

Wednesday about 10 AM is the best time here.

 

Back in the late 60s the DMV on Staten Island NY were found taking money for drivers lic and pocketing it. A whole bunch of them got arrested.
A buddy of mine went to check on some tickets and found out there was no record of his drivers lic.
Yes, you always had the wrong paperwork.
I live in Colorado now and had a pleasant experience at the DMV in Arvada
Colorado. I did make the mistake of going on a Monday, about 1 hour total.
I got two title changes and a temp tag for one car. Went back Tuesday with the emissions report and the paper work from the day before. Total time 1/2
hour and the same clerk took care of me both times.

Best one for frustrations with DMV for me..........bought a 69 Chevy pickup., no keys, engine frozen up. Called locksmith, won't make a key until the title is in my name, not just transferred on the back. Go to DMV, they won't issue title without smog test......IT DOESN'T RUN! I figured I'd just get it insured on my classic car policy, get my insurance agent to fax a coverage statement. He did. The clerk looked at it and told me it's a classic car policy, but the law is exemption for collector cars, not classics. I asked (politely, of course) to speak to her supervisor. She left, came back to her window about 30 minutes later and told me they would make an exception in my case, and issued title and plates.

 

I suppose they couldn't be fired, natch. So they retired at age 36 amirite?

 

DMV is NOT user friendly ,

 

Here in Connecticut, the DMV is also closed Monday. If there is a holiday that falls on a Monday, they get Tuesday off as well!

My Dad used to tell about sending in the paperwork for his company's trucks. The form said it had to be signed in ink. Well, to him INK comes from a fountain-type pen, which is what he usually used. More often than not, the forms were sent back to be signed again. The clerks were used to ball-point pens.

 

Well, you used to be able to make an appointment here in 'Vegas, but things went so smooth they reverted to take a number and wait. Idiots at best.

 

They used to print the approximate wait time on the slips... not any more. Must have been a few dis-satisfied customers to deal with over it. But now they have screens and you can narrow it down to what window is for what. People watching is always fun regardless.

 

I suspect that the DMV's that are closed on Mondays are probably open on Saturdays for the public's convenience.

 

Yes they are, 8am til Noon, 4 hours with at least twice as many people there that can't go during the week trying to get paperwork done in half the time that it normally takes them 8 hours with less people and still can't get it right! Yeah that's hardly convenient around here!

 

Actually shouldn't say it.....but of late the Texas DMV has been pretty good the past month or so.....resistered a few lately....one last registered in 1972....another from a last plated in 1980....and my deceased uncle's ride from out of state even....a few smiles and - yes - look right there....and then there's the convertible - had the title BUT - I tracked down the owner who signed it off in RED ink....a real no no around here.....that only took me a little over 20 years of chasing after - but it's finally in my name and one of the few that's had a few miles put on it moving it from friend to friend....

 

Hopefully I won't have to go to the SCDMV anytime soon. HRP

 

Good DMV story: This week I took my nephew in for his driver's test. Used my wife's car, he enlisted in the Marines prior to getting a license or a car and spent his tour overseas. So I sat there with all the other dummies while he waited his turn and again while he was out hopefully not smashing up the car. I hate sitting at the DMV as much or more than the next guy, but the thumbs up and smile he gave me when they returned made it worthwhile.

Here's the weird part: I have gotten at least three spam emails since then offering me driving lessons! I did no searches or anything related to the DMV, driver training or anything related prior. Even the car we used is registered to my wife. How did they get my email address? Even my nephew doesn't have it, he uses texts.

 

I guess I'm a lucky guy as here in Texas you must register your vehicle in the county of your residence.
This is done at your local tax office,,,Drivers licence is done by Dept of Public Safety((Hwy Patrol)
The lady at my tax office and her husand are personal friends too.

 

It has gotten better than it was 40 years ago when you had to stand in line when they had a line for each window. Then you g0t to the window and they gave you the paperwork to fill out standing there. Next came the change where they gave you the paperwork to fill out away from the counter then get back in line.

Now they have a person when you come in who checks what you are trying to do, gives you the proper paperwork, a clipboard and a number. They have chairs and video screens on both sides of the room showing the numbers in order telling which window to go to when your number comes up. There is also a person to ask about any questions you have on the forms. If somebody isn't ready, they take the next one in line and move them down one spot instead of to the back of the line like they did in the past.

 

I've only been to the DMV once since moving to CA. My friend told me to make an appointment and I was sure to, after all the DMV stereotypes. I arrived early for my appointment only to see a line of... probably 300 people, around the inside of the building, out the building, down the parking lot, and almost down the sidewalk. Oh, crap. I stood in line for a couple minutes, contemplating an early demise, when I decided to double-check my stance.

I walked all the way.. just to the building.. and asked the guard (sidenote - I never saw security at the offices in my native Missouri) if this was the line for appointments. "No, that's inside. Red carpet." "Uh..." So I walk in, see the literal red carpet under a sign that says "Appointment Line" and.. I was THE ONLY PERSON THERE WHO MADE AN APPOINTMENT. I stood there long enough to make eye contact with the teller and proceeded to conduct my transaction, really smooth, really quick. I think maybe a couple people from the original line had made progress by the time I was already walking out with my paperwork in order.

Why would anyone NOT make an appointment in CA?

 

Remember the old days in Texas when ALL license plates expired the same day? Those that put off going to the DMV paid dearly by waiting in lines....this was before internet existed. Then, people would pay other folks to stand in line for them and do the registration.....sometimes you would get behind some lady who was doing 50 registrations.......good old days?

 

The YOM license plates in Missouri help a lot. I have not had to fool with inspections and registration on my 3 hobby vehicles for several years.

Also, in Missouri, they issue trailer licenses for 1 year or 3 years which, of course, cost 3 times as much. The last time I went through the ordeal with both trailers the nice lady asked me if I wanted 1 year or 3 year stickers. Before I could stop myself I said "Do you think I want to go the ordeal every year with the DMV?" She said that I didn't have to be so rude about it. I replied that she started it. She kinda snickered but I don't think she thought it was funny.
