Nice! What part you heading to? I work at rock falls raceway when I got spare time to network with drag racing. That is fun being there

You may not like what I think, but I'm going to suggest the way I would do it anyway. I'm not into patina, but if I decided to do this, I would clean up the existing part as best I could before trying to match it on the replacement fenders. That way it will remain closer to matching for as long as you want to keep it that way.

I had the same dilemma as you and this is what I did and never looked back.

Sand the whole thing, black matte it, then wet sand a week or so later.

I don't get this "I want a rusty POS look".

Heck, leave it as is, or do something to make the car look better...never thought putting on a "patinaed" fender, enhanced the look of an automobile, but I suppose there are other views.

Hey, why not just grind all the paint off...look at all the patina you'll have, and no need to spray a thing!

    Brilliant I tell ya!

I love this, this type of paint job is what I would do once I’m done with the patina or have the money to spend on paint, that old school paint job nothing flashy. I love that very nice!

Well I didn’t put a patina fender on just for the fun of it, the old ones were damaged bad. All I’m doing is trying to get it to match till I can afford a paint job

We had a neighbor that did body work and paint on a Firebird in his driveway that turned out surprisingly nice. He did the work one panel at a time ,worked it,primed it , then painted it one panel at a time, all the while driving it.looked a little strange til it was done, and I can't remember how long it took, maybe a month, but looked pretty good when done. Used rattle can primer and paint I believe

when I need to blend a vintage panel I just take a test board to home depot or lowes and give a squirt from the rattle cans that look close, then I compare them in the light. get a satin color and then use steel wool on it to knock it down even more.

the great thing about the *ahem* experienced guys is their knowledge, sometimes the not so good thing is their opinions. you can usually get them to share their knowledge by asking (and always with proper respect) but their opinions are free. not "free" like buy-one-get-one or like a balloon or something else you really would enjoy. more "free" like road apples, and most are just as tasty. your mistake was when you asked for criticism, because you didnt really need to, you would have gotten great big heaps of it without asking. I especially love going to these local show and shines and having some guy come up and pelt me with the unsolicited "WHAT YOU SHOULDA/I WOULDA DONE IS"... well by all means, go do it.

life is too short to be spent explaining yourself to people who arent going to like the explanation anyway. do what you like. a guy bought a truck from me and say he was going to put some huge boss hogg steer horns on the hood, I told him to swing around my way if he had any trouble mounting them. it is, after all, his truck.

i think I would use the original wings as inspiration and try to recreate the patina on the old parts.concentrate on getting the undercoat colour close.if you don't get the black exact then fade the new black onto the doors.we have a local paint shop that will mix and fill aerosol cans any colour.wont break the bank.a couple of cans will go a long way.

From the photos, idk if you guys noticed how the front clip is rusted? I don’t think their is a primer beneath the black. I think these were worked on way back in the day.. but from the looks of the other they used a red sandable primer, I have found any signs of that on the front. I could be wrong though. I been busy as hell lately and will keep updating as I go

  29. Jim, Great car. Word of advise. HAMB is great for sharing info and tech knowledge. But, I would never ask for opinions on my cars appearance. You will get all kinds of B.S. It's your car and if they ain't paying the bills they should keep their mouths shut. These oldster's need to realize that 4 door cars and long wheel base trucks are the future of our hobby. Less is more!
