The "plank"photo was shot right around the lower left 101 sign on the current Google map.

When the right swell comes in, the waves line up from the outside point all the way to the Coast Highway. During the early 60’s, we used to be able to park on the highway, ocean side and watch the waves while we were getting our “warmth” going inside our old hot rods. (sedan deliveries, wagons and vans.)

The beach side, car parking was eliminated because of safety. But, now, one has to park in a separate parking lot within those forested beach area on the point.

    Hello,

This is one place in California that you used to be able to park your surf vehicles along the rocks on the ocean side of the highway. Check out the surf, park all day, enjoy the beach, all fun things to do back in the late 50's early 60's.

How can anyone not remember this fabulous spot for the quintessential surfing experience in So Cal? The official name is Rincon Beach Park, but everyone knows it by just Rincon. It breaks only in the winter swells and sometimes a sneaker swell will make it break during the spring. But, for the most part, it is a winter surf spot that is very cold.

Early in the morning, the offshore breezes come over the cliffs and adds to the cold. When these winds are blowing, the take offs are a little scary, as the wind blows the spray back into your face and eyes. If the moment passes and you get on the wave, the ride becomes the most intense ride for a wave in So Cal.

We may be old, but that PLANK photo was “waaay” before our time at Rincon in the late 50’s and early 60’s. But, it would have been fun being the only guys out there, then. That has only been done several times in the modern era…4:45 am paddle out and then the sun rises.

The massive landslide was just up the road in La Conchita that closed this highway, years ago.
