Sounds like the OP would rather have the Chevy. (His avatar is "Mr.Chevrolet").

Right on about a Brookville and running ch***is. You started ok, the next move is hers. "Well dear, get me closer. What did you have in mind?" If she bites back at something silly like $12-15K you thank her for the opportunity to see it and wish her luck as you leave a ph number. Never burn a bridge. What's it worth to an end user? Cleaned up and ready to present to a serious buyer I think it could net $8500 or more. It is a 31 roadster and looks solid. What's up with the engine? Just 2 carbs or is it an OHV conversion? Hard to tell from the pictures. I'm not a full tilt authority on such things but some OHV stuff for As is fairly desirable (meaning $$$). And you've scrounged up one in a roadster. If I had to pick between a 37 Chevy sedan and a mildly hopped up banger roadster I think I'd be in the longer line. At the end of my tenure with it the roadster leaves home way faster, and likely for more jack as well, but in the end you have to decide. Anything under or up to $8500 is a decent score, anything less might net some envy. $6K would have gotten a lot of "...I hate you..." comments. Just sayin, good luck.

Always take $20s and $50s it looks like a lot more when shown to a seller.

Not really impressed when someone shows me a fat stack of 20's and 50's.
Just takes longer to count out the money if a deal is done.

..And a trailer. Just my experience. Always show up to buy, with cash and towing. Can't tell you how many times I've been told no and bought something else on the way home. In fact, I rarely go out without enough cash to buy what I may find. Also, some banks will let you make arrangements to be able to withdrawal more then $800 per day from a single ATM. I've emptied a few :D

Some people go as far as to SEND in other potential buyers, who ALL offer less that you did, making the seller THINK your hibid/offer needs to be re-visited, and quick...lol

You guys are awfully free with waving a stack of money around to someone you don't know. Do you not read about people getting robbed or murdered trying to buy a car.
My money stays out of site until the purchase is made and my gun stays in my pocket.
I would prefer to lose a car deal than to lose my hard earned cash or my life. Always take someone with you when you are buying. Always be prepared to walk away if it feels uncomfortable.
She may seem like a sweet old lady ,but she have some loser sons who would do something that she did not even know about ahead of time.
An older couple from Georgia made a deal on what they thought was their dream car, a Mustang convertible. There was no car and they lost their money and their life when they showed up to buy the car.

Did this back in the 70's with a 37 Chevy Coupe I wanted. I let the seller set the price range. It seemed high so I came back with a cash offer of what I could pay, he said no and I left my name and number. By the weekend he called and agreed to my offer. Besides getting the coupe, I also made great friends with him and his Wife.

I go in with the mind set, of an auction.
If I like the car, I have a ceiling I will pay for it..no more, regardless of the asking price.

  14. People's prices are stupid! I left my card in the door of a house with a 37-40 Ford coupe body in the driveway, the women who lives there called and said "she and her boyfriend wanted $6,000 for it!"

I knew a guy who wanted $8 Grand for a car. A guy laid out $7500 cash on the hood of the car at a car show with everybody watching. It looks like your a little short. The owner said, I told you I was firm on my price. The guy drove 2 hours to get the car. The next day, the guy with him drove back to buy the car for himself. He was embarr***ed about what his buddy did. It was the buy of the year. He said.---------------It sounds like you are a wheeler Dealer, were you gonna turnaround and sell it.

Honestly can't like this post enough. You never, NEVER, NEVER make the first offer, with the rare exception when your offer is so low as it could never be accepted. If it's a fair offer, you shouldn't be the first one to move. As someone who negotiates on a daily basis, you always need to leave yourself plenty of room to move, because once you make a move you can't unring the bell.

At the end of the day, the negotiation and sale of any item needs to be fair to both parties. Sometimes we need to step back and make sure we are not caught up in trying to get the best of the other party.

When I am making an offer that involves a significant amount, I state it very concisely, i.e. "I offer to pay you X amount of dollars as is, where is for this item and my offer is good for 24 hours."

I've had people play the game of calling me a week later (after research and trying to get competing offers) and saying that they will accept my offer. My response is, "That offer was only good for 24 hours." The pot usually gets sweetened.

The other game we need to be cautious about as a buyer is the call that so-and-so has offered me this amount and will you pay more? My response is that they need to sell it to so-and-so. Surprisingly, so-and-so changes their mind more often than not....

That looks like a pretty solid body, with a good ***le and a cool engine in it, $6K wasn't an insult but I don't think it was all the money either. More details would have to be known to really put a price on it, but I'd be tickled to buy that car for $6K. I feel like if I saw that advertised locally, the asking price would be at least double.

I'd be very curious to know if anyone could come up with any ads for comparable cars for that price or less. And "comparable" means no coupes, no new replica bodies, and no unfinished auctions.

This Roadster was for sale up here recently, don't think it had dual carbs, but it was running, on the road, registered, solid but not a creampuff, sounded like a survivor, a driver. Perfect base for a hotrod. $7000. Sold pretty quickly, in fact I'm sure on day 1, (just took the old guy a week or so to take the ad down). Decent cars are pricey up here in Boston, but I think this was a screaming deal. Wish I had some scratch at the time, I would have grabbed it.

I think if the OP were really hot for an A he might have made it work, but I think he prefers Chevies.

Buying and selling (people in general are more obnoxious than ever) in our car hobby has changed some IMO, all cars are worth what someone is willing to pay on that day, other side of coin is what seller will take on that day. The art of the deal is a lost skill IMO, a courtious conversation goes a long way and the idea of leaving your name and number if price changes in time is the right thing to do if the car trips your trigger, but $$$ is more than you want to pay that day. I have no opinions on car values anymore as the MANY EXPERTS on here will always help the OP out, most must be in the car business. Here's a tip, The only thing I have noticed that has gotten cheaper through time is, Me ! Good luck on what ever you decide !

In my mind, with what I am seeing advertised on different venues people would be asking $10k for that car as is. If you consider that a Brookville body with shipping is $7500, that doesn't seem out of line since the real metal from Henry is much nicer. I would say anything under $8500 is a steal!!

So I ***ume your less desired couple will be reasonably price at maybe $3,500? I am saying this in jest ,but I am always amused at the fact that someone else is always to high price when the guy is tring to buy , but when they are selling it is a whole different story. Good luck with your chevy and selling your model A. But keep this post in mind when the offers come in . Larry

Man...I dont know about the rest of the country, but Im looking for a 30/31 roadster or coupe in similar condition, and they are non existant in Calif. at this price. In fact, just a body brings 5/6000 here. If anyone has a similar car for this price, please E me...I will travel.
