  18. In the early 1960s, the Canterbury Car Club (Christchurch, New Zealand0 were fund raising for the establishment of a permanent road racing circuit. A publicity event was held at the New Brighton Trotting Club horse racing track. The horse racing track closed not long after this when the club amalgamated with another local club. The road circuit became a reality, opening in 1963 and still in business as the Mike Pero Motorsport Park. Originally 1 mile in length it was double in length in the 1990s.
