Well, I've got most of that blocked off! No real surprises, I should have color by the end of the week. ( I took a week off work) IMG_3027.JPG IMG_3028.JPG IMG_3029.JPG

Having fun watching. Are you painting it on the frame or are you putting the body on a dolly?

It's stayiyon the frame for several reasons. A). I've got the body shimmed so the doors align, and the hood fits. B). I managed to scratch the front frame rails installing the shocks and making the headlight stands, so I need to paint them anyway. C). It's too hard to lift the body off the frame in my crowded shop with a cherry picker. Much easier to mask off the firewall and engine.

Been working at the final prep for paint today (well, over the past weekend, but a full day today), and I've got everything blocked out down to 360. Tomorrow I'm going to shoot everything in red oxide, as my plan is to have a couple of places cut through the final color into the primer, like the tops of the doors where one would rest one's arm, the crown of the hood tops and maybe the quarters. We'll see though, I may not have courage to cut through the finish color, it may be all shiny, in which case the red oxide will simply be the final coat of primer before final blocking and color. I can decide when the color is on. The weather is supposed to cool off after tomorrow, so I may not be able to get color on it this week. We shall see. The T'bird is covered with a tarp in the driveway, so I'm ready as long as the weather cooperates even a little bit. 22555049_10215225571815243_4369383262805571348_n.jpg 22688840_10215225572095250_6929865504641596968_n.jpg 22729062_10215224110258705_8082910545826471134_n.jpg

  9. Good call on leaving the finished paint alone. Fake patina is just that, fake. You've worked damn hard on this roadster. Finish it like it deserves.

It's going to cost me a lot of money, now I'll have to get the w/s frame and posts chromed, and the grill is a 20 footer...

Whew. I'm exhausted. Two days of masking, sanding, priming, sanding, masking, priming, and sanding remind me I'm not as young as I once was. The roadster is as ready as it's gonna be for color, though, which feels good. Parts are hung on the make shift paint racks, I have to mask off the engine and firewall one last time, so tomorrow I should have color on it. Everything looks good, although I found one "surprise", in the rumble lid, the outer skin had separated from the inner panel by the left hand hinge. How I never noticed that is a mystery, but I mixed up a little mud, separated them a little further with a screwdriver, sanded between the panels with some 36 grit paper, packed the mud in and let the panels pop back together. Seems good now, I'm glad I noticed it before the color went on. It'd only have gotten worse.
Cool and rainy is the forecast, but I can heat the shop in the morning while I finish getting ready, and shoot it in the afternoon. Stay tuned! 22688077_10215232559509931_7870469353299036566_n.jpg 22788829_10215232558349902_1677134468056262334_n.jpg

:D All that block sanding paid off, it's laser straight. I love it. The planned "patina" for the paint is looking less and less attractive...;)

It's single stage urethane. I haven't painted for several years, but it's like riding a bike, I guess. Laid down like glass, super easy to shoot, nice depth, right out of the gun. I foolishly left my ceiling fan on, and wondered where the dust came from that appeared in the last coat on the doors. In addition, if I'd made racks to hang them, rather than lay 'em flat, it wouldn't have been issue, but I was in a hurry and have a space issue. Duh. I planned on color sanding and polish it anyway, now I have to to get the dust nibs out. It'll look better anyway. I have a "Buff-Flex" pad and discs, which are something like 4,000 grit, so I'll sand it with 1500 and use that as opposed to compounding. Black was always hard (for me anyway) to get the swirl marks out of using a wool bonnet and compound.

Ow my eyes! I can't see I can't see everything is so bright and shiney! :D Looks great! To me nothing means your turning the corner on your build like when you finally get the paint on the bodywork. The down side is you have to slow down a bit during reassembly so you don't damage that nice paint work.

IMG_3166.JPG IMG_3171.JPG Doors and rumble lid on. Looking good. So good in fact, it's changing my build plan. I have to decide what I'm going to do with the grill shell and w/s frame and posts. Chrome? Paint 'em black? Sell the ones I have and buy new repop ones, add a little to what I get for them to pay for the new stuff.

I've decided the grill I have has to go. It would have been fine for the "distressed" look, but damn, I don't think I have the heart to intentionally ruin a really nice paint job. There's an add in the classifieds for it, I'd like to offset the (staggering to me) cost of a new one.

Good call Brian, an old distressed grille on your shiny black roadster would be like wearing dirty sneakers with a tuxedo.
