I'm currently in a delima I have the option to possibly trade my 54 Mercury for this 33 dodge sedan and I'm stumped on what to do so here are some specs. My merc has plenty of blemishes being left outside after a restoration in the early 90's so a lot of bodywork and full repaint are needed but it's still a 10 footer. It has a 302 , c4 stock rear , has been rewired , rack and pinion steering super clean restored interior and new wide whites. On the other hand the 33 is a all steel car with not so great paint either and a bunch of taxi decals but the pros are a mustang front end with rack and pinion steering , power brakes , electric wiper , rewired , stereo , four escort bucket seats and just plain interior. Now the real bad , Chevy straight six motor , turbo 350 trans and ford 9inch rear so my question is , does it seem to be a fair trade I think my merc might be nicer but with some work the 33 can be the hot rod I've been wanting so what are your thoughts

I think your Mercury is the better car overall especially the drivetrain. The '33 won't gain many fans here with the mustang suspension.

  4. You ask for opinions - I would much rather have the Mercury. HRP

I am a big fan, all my life, of late ‘20’s- early ‘30’s cars, but in this case I’d stay with the Merc. From my perspective here are the cons- six cylinder, MII front suspension plus it rides too high in front, four bucket seats, and the color might get tiresome quickly.
    ‘nuff said.

  14. Thirties cars do it for me, and the taxi paint is easy enough to change.
In saying that, I'd keep the Merc.
Taxi needs to much to be cool, where as the Merc's cool even with its issues.

    Merc for me.

Of course if I were in your place I'd probably tell my wife I'm going to buy the dodge and sell the merc, and never sell the merc ;)

Looks like I'd be a fool to do the trade then , and yes mine is the better car but being a body man by trade I just see the 33 painted already with the front end buried in the ground and a v8 under the hood but I've had a few days off work being sick and got bored with my car since I haven't done anything to it in awhile but I guess I would be going backwards to trade so thanks for the imput

  26. Your Mercury does look nice as it is. I personally like the 30s cars better than the 50s cars, but that Dodge will have to have a lot done to look decent again. Just think of all the things you would have to change. If you are wanting to trade for an older car you might find one that wouldn't have to have so much redone on it. I would be tempted too but you would be trading a nice car for one starting from scratch in my opinion.

    Hello,
There are two completely different ideas of being involved in old cars. Of course, one: you own the Merc. But, two, the 33 Dodge sedan has the qualities that can not be replaced, namely the look. Full fenders, all steel, plus, all of the components are there, you would just have to finish it. Maybe a lowered stance, but it would be your choice as to the steps. The ground work is there.

You said the paint needs work, so, the yellow paint would have to go. Run the 6 as a reliable cruiser until you need more power of an SBC. All of the other components are, again, there as part of the package. (auto, Ford 9 inch rear, wheels, etc.)

It seems like there are more Merc fans, but the 33 Dodge has the look that just begs for more attention. Instead of the millions with Fords, you would be an individual with the 33 Dodge and two sets of suicide doors, to boot! The Dodge is it...look at that cool grille/fender combo...!

Who cares if it has a Mustang front end. It would be your car. If it rides, handles well and is safe to drive with your family for fun hours of cruising...say no to the naysayers... Old cars need to drive and be safe, as well as look nice.
It is your choice. Besides, when the Mustang front ends came out, they were very popular and were the envious part of the finished hot rod. It is period correct for the times.

But, of course, the choice is yours...or your wife's. For kids, the 4 doors are better suited for total family fun. IMHO

A 54 Merc are one of my favorites but so are 30s MOPARs go for the dodge. I don't have a problem with Mustang II with fenders. Fender less cars need a straight axle.

I'm totally on board with that but considering I had two driving projects and a motorcycle not long ago having a wife and two small kids I finally realized I only have time for one 'barely' so I downsized and then figured out I could get one further along without other ones getting in the way so I've convinced myself I only need one project for now until my kids are old enough to start there own hopefully
