So, I have been a member here for awhile. I have done a lot of deals on this site and prefer it over the various other "list" sites when it comes to selling. As I stated before the guys I have bought from and sold to have been great until this last deal. That being said, do I **** it up or put the hamb "users" name out there as a buyers/sellers beware?

Here is how it had gone. I list an item (over 1k) buyer says he wants it but will need time to come get it. No problem i think we all have lives. Buyer says he needs a month, no problem. Get close to the date, buyer says won't work needs to postpone for a whole more month. Offers a deposit to hold but states if I don't want to hold it he understands. I state that I would rather deal with folks from the HAMB because it has felt like there is a higher standard here on this site. I send my address and wait for the deposit it never comes. Two weeks go by and send a pm asking what is going on, and I get no response. I wait until a week before he said he would pick it up a second time, and ask if he is still coming not caring about the deposit no response. This weekend was supposed to be the deal. What do you all think? I expect this from other sites but have not experienced this on this one, am I expecting to much from this site or is there a responsibility to hold each other accountable?

    Thanks,

He gave you permission to sell, and you hung in there with him. That was nice, but... . Whatever the reason, his lack of communication killed the deal. Should have taken the deposit. Only thing he took from you was time, and you were generous to give it away. You may be a little disappointed in the guy, but you didn't get screwed. I too, would have hoped for better, but sadly, people have to sink pretty low to surprise me anymore. Sell you widget to the next guy with cash, and look at how many posts a guy has. Long-time members would have more credibility in my eyes.

I've had more than one "deal" here where the person wants this or that, and after several (lots) of PMs back & forth but no action, you learn to recognize the buyers from the "pen pals".
Bottom line : you lost nothing. Smile, because most of us with complaints have lost $$$$

Yep, he flaked, but didn't take your money. Doesn't seem like grounds for trashing him.

If a buyer needs time ask for a nun refundable deposit.

  7. Don't post here a whole lot , have bought a lot of stuff through the cl***ifieds
Been burnt once ( the guy was a scammer and I did not bother with due diligence) though it was the HAMB and all is good...... not so.

I have been interested in a lot of stuff, asked the seller to check shipping to me, and when shipping costs get totalled etc sometimes it's more then the parts worth so I p***..... I do feel guilty having them do that leg work but what am I supposed to do in these instances ? Being Canadian I guess a sorry is in order!

When I sell stuff it's no holds no deals first one with cash gets it . Easier that way

I'm certainly not one of the charter members nor am I one of the more active ones but would like to make an observation. Just because someone took a couple of minutes to sign up on this site and become a member doesn't mean that said membership suddenly instilled that person with any honesty, integrity, or character. Don't expect any more than you would on another site and there will be less disappointments..

I call them Dreamers and from my experiences they either don't have the money or their better half won't allow it.

A thousand dollars is a lot of money, and maybe the guy just couldn't come up with it in the allotted time, who knows, you still have the item. I wouldn't bother posting his ID, you are only out your time, and the chance to spend the money you would have had if the deal went down in a week or so.

Ryan offers the cl***ifieds as a free service and from what you told us you didn't loose a dime,so no harm no foul, nothing is sold until you have the money in your hand.

I have bought and sold several things in the cl***ifieds and feel more confident when purchasing from a fellow Alliance member, thees guys think enough of the service the cl***ifieds offers to join the Alliance and help support the Hamb.

These people will be more apt to be stand up guys and do what they say they will because they are vested in it plus Ryan has said in the past if a problem ever arises between two Alliance Members he will intervene.

There are people that use the cl***ifieds exclusively and never participate in any of the main forums, this is a red flag for me,a big enough deal and they may cut and run.

I've had dealings with "non-Hambers" that went the same as yours...........I just call it "life" or like 28 Ford PU said, "Dreamers".

In my mind, ground rules should always go to the seller............

  17. It's open enrollment, and thus subject to that same phenomenon.

A few years ago I bought some stuff on eBay.
The next morning my dad was rushed to ER, and needed heart by-p*** surgery. It was at least 3 months before I even remembered that EBay transaction I never completed.

There was thread a while back, a member here secured transportation of a frame he purchased thru craigslist. His frame never showed up and contact stopped after the frame was picked up. He thought he got his frame stolen by the guy picking it up. Turned out the guy who picked up the frame got hit head on and died in a fiery crash. News and Accident photos showed the pickup with the frame tied to the top of the guys pick-up Truck.

**** happens, people have lives, some people have real problems.

Had a guy this week on the HAMB that was selling a part. I PMed him and told him that I wanted it and how to send the funds. He replied that it was mine and tp pay via PayPal. No problem, but before I could even send the money he emailed me that he sold it to his buddy. I guess that if it was the other way around I would have the integrity to tell my buddy that I had already sold it and he was out. Oh well,

I sell a lot of parts on CL. Lots of guys want stuff but simply don't have money, those that do will be there to get it. They think they can get money somehow but never come up with it. Deal with it all the time. Dreamers. Move on.

  24. This has happened to me a couple of times, and I feel that it is my choice that I decided to hang on to the part for the person to show. The most recent is, a 3/4 inch air impact hammer that the person just had to have. He asked me to hold it for him until the end of the month, and during that time I missed the opportunity to sell the tool locally for the amount I was asking. I never heard again from the guy who asked me to hold it, and I missed the sale.
From now on for me, I want a deposit of 10%, or whatever I am selling goes to the first person at the door.
I had other instances, where I have held an article for someone and they were very appreciative, so I still may break my own rule under special cir***stances.
I agree with the others, in that because you haven't lost any money, no harm no fowl. :)

I don't even bother to deal with the "first with cash buys it" sellers that won't take a deposit.
Had experiences with cars and parts being 4-6 hours away and calling while driving to let them know where I am and getting close to the sellers location only to learn someone a hour away got there first.I don't waste anymore time on those idiots.
Surprisingly(or not) I have kept track of some of those "first with cash" sellers and wouldn't you know it they have contacted me to buy parts and want me to hold the parts for them.

  29. Lately ive ran into the same thing folks say they want something. but the never send payment. Some want to do pay pal. I got burnt with Pay Pal when I was selling stuff on Ebay. occasionally Crooks would claim they never got the item or something was wrong with it. and Pay Pal always sided with the buyer. lost the items and money and time and shipping cost. So no more pay pal. Heck with it no more selling on the net. I don't need the money. I will sell if someone comes in person looks the item over and pays cash. I wont waste time on dreamers any more.

  30. Paypal is ok for that 10% deposit,
The liberal & no questions refund policy has no unilateral accountability.
