So since I can't build most of my frame this weekend (got the main part of it done yesterday, and yes I took pictures, but I'm saving them to start a build thread when the car is closer to being road worthy) for my 27 T Lizzie, I'm looking to see what all I can do. I have all 4 wheels (2 stock steel wheels off an 80's ford truck and 2 brand new ones) and all 4 moon discs, and 12 Dzus 1/4 turn fasteners and plates, I figure I can get my disks mounted. Can someone post some pictures of how they have their plates mounted? Because I'm confused as all hell and can't visualize how they're mounted. Sent from my LG-K373 using Tapatalk
Had the self-tapping screws on a Camaro years ago. Hardly ever checked the tire pressure as the screws got looser every time you used them. And the wheels flex (believe it or not) and after a while you'll see a disc rolling along side your car. The dzus fasteners are the way to go.
"I didn't like the self tapping screws so I drilled and tapped my rims for 1/4 -20 hardware" Still the same problem. Six(?) fasteners instead of three. And I think the Dzus fasteners are more compliant with the flexing of the wheels.
The ECTA at the time said six screws for a Moon disk. I did three groups of two in a triangle type pattern with sheet metal style screws. GIANT pain in the ***. I would have done Dzus fasteners, but I knew I could never get them welded in the right spot without screwing it up. -Abone.
this was on my daily driver HOT ROD Datsun pickup in the 80's. 200 miles a week just for work. never had problems in probably 4 or more years of having them on the car.
Dean Moon did make special discs which had three Zeus fasteners but they are a pain in the *** to mount and you have to weld tabs on to the rim. Dean told me to use a 1/4 20 ****on head screw and drill and tap right into the rim...it's very simple you and won't lose air because you're only going thru the rim and not through the rubber bead night so somebody's got it of the tire so you will not lose any air just use the disk as a fixed your drill one hole at the top through the desk tappet put a ****on head Alan and snug it down then go to the other two holes drilled through the ram run a tap through it just deep enough to go through the rim and screw the other two ****on heads in use a T handle Allen wrench. This makes for a very clean installation it's easy to get on and off with the T handle and nobody can steal them and less they got an Allen wrench in their pocket. Are use this technique with success for years on a couple of my vehicles looks great the wheels don't wobble up-and-down and it is a relatively simple way of mounting them. Forget about using sheet metal screws as they are not made for screwing into steel as thick as a rim. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
I used 10-32 Phillips head screws until I got smart and went with the quarter turn fasteners. I do not find them a pain in the *** to mount. Don't know how anyone would. But everybody is en***led to their own opinion.
Dean Moon was good friend of mine and I hung out at the shop all thru the'80's lettering Moon Discs . I don't know where you got your speculation that they never used Dzus fasteners but they did make and sell them . I personally saw many around the shop to be shipped and also they were mounted on his ramp truck and motornome. It was the trick way to mount them for Bonneville cars and was allowed back then. Take a look in the catalogs from Eighties. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
wbrw32 Member from jefferson,tx HAMB Old Farts' Club Upholstery You really think Dean Moon used dzus????Hell no....................................I was answering this guy who thinks Dean Moon didn't use Dzus fasteners. I don't know what he used. But I was pretty sure he would have used them if he had thought about it. I have a somewhat amusing story that includes Dean Moon at Bonneville. But it's to long for here. PS. My roadster has quarter turn fasteners installed. I think you need to reread my post,
I have the clip on Moon disk and have an issue with the disk moving while traveling , others in the UK have mentioned this in the past , mine are the starburst disk , anyone have a solution
I always wanted to have a set of these for one of my el Caminos but the fastener issue always stopped me in my tracks.. I'd use a good set of aluminum wheels that balance perfectly. There are wheels made that have bolts around the edge that could be used to fasten the Moon Disc..
