  1. Nice to see some B&W shots that have yet to be "improved" by colorizing! Leave them B&W I say!

  6. Not sure if it was Todds doing the badge engineering - goes back the country of origin I think. Both Rootes group and Chrysler Canada did it extensively, independent of each other.

  10. From post #416142 above this is Christchurch Airport, New Zealand in the mid 1960s. The wagon is a Holden HD, a model first seen in 1965. The US Antarctic Support Programme has been operating from there since about 1956. This shot was taken in Orchard Road looking at what is known as 'The Pits', where the US military transport aircraft park. Still much the same today, just now occupied by a few C-130s and the odd C-17, along with any visiting VIP or military aircraft, depending on the time of year.

It was Todd motors. The Humber 80 & 90 were NZ exclusive embarassments.

They were all sold side by side in the same dealerships so they didn't gain any market advantage by doing this.
Todd motors did this to secure additional import licenses for their assembly plant.

  12. Further to post #146459 here is an aerial shot of the same area from just a few years earlier, with an interesting assortment of US military transport aircraft. The main domestic airport terminal has been through some major changes in recent years but the two buildings at lower left are still there. The larger one with the C-130 parked facing it had a, maybe more modern, C-130 in the same spot just this week. aerodrome1 year unknown.jpg

  13. Surely the Humber 80s went to the Humber dealers and likewise the Minxes went to the Hillman dealers? When I say Rootes had been badge engineering for a long time I mean they sold Talbots with Humber bodies and all sorts of things pre WW2. Chrysler Canada's first Plodge was the 1932 Dodge DM, a now rare car, of which there is at least one example in NZ.

NZ in the 60's was import restrictive , there was a shortage and waiting list on new cars [you could bypass the waiting with overseas funds]
Todd motors didn't split franchises, they sold Dodges, Plymouths, Aussie Chrysler, Humber, Hillman, Singer, Commer all from the same dealerships.
The Same with GM, Holden, Pontiac, Chevrolet, Vauxhall were all sold side by side.

My Grandfather was a huge GM fan, I remember him having a New Pontiac Laurentian and a new Holden Premier X2 side by side in his garage in 1967
