I have always heard that you must rotate the handle clockwise to start the motor. If the motor backfires during ignition, that handle could bounce back and break your wrist. Is there any truth to this? Thanks for any information.

Lower left is Ruby Keebler, lower right is Bebe Daniels, and I think upper left is Una Merkerl. The other 2 look familiar but I can't put a name on'em. All named came to fame in Busby Berkley movies.

  8. I have not done a lot of hand cranking, but I have the experience of others to share. The way you are supposed to crank, is to pull on the crank in the clockwise direction. This will protect your thumb and wrist if the engine kicks back. I had two older friends that managed to mangle their thumbs so badly that the hand required an operation to put in a plate and pins.
I used to watch my uncle start his tractor, and he made it look so easy. If I remember correctly, he had a retard/advance control on the column, and he would retard the timing when he hand started it.

  9. The best way to crank the vehicle without hurting your wrist is to NOT wrap your fingers around the crank. Make a fist and brace the end of the crank handle against your fingernails/first knuckle and your palm/heel of your hand. Push down AWAY from your body. That way, if it DOES decide to kick back, it will not get your arm. A lot of Model T guys, LIFT and crank, but I will not do it that way.

Wait until you have to hand start and airplane engine, especially one with a metal propeller. Yea, if you get spark before top dead center... oppps.

  11. Yeah, I have a friend that was a seaplane pilot before starting with the airline, and he lost his leg below the knee cause by hand starting a float plane. There is a funny story involved with this, but I don't know if it appropriate because the story relates to how he advised the authorites about the accident.
I propped my own planes lots of times, you have to make certain you have proper footing and good balance.

  12. The way I learned, is to hold the crank with four fingers with the thumb not wrapped around the crank, and pull up. This way, if the engine kicks, the crank just pulls out of your hand and rotates away from your body, without doing any damage.

  13. I found an interesting youtube upload on how to start a model T. I didn't look to see if it had the electric start or a hand crank, but I thought the article was interesting enough to post.
