That guy's holding the clear plastic cover for the Wynn's Atom Smasher. It was a demonstation for an oil additive. You pour a little oil in the cup and the motor spins a small bearing while you put it under a load until the bearing burns up. Then you repeat the demonstration with the oil additive and no matter how much load you put on the bearing it won't burn up...Supposedly.

 

And a floatation device too!

 

I do miss this theater, the new ones don't quite have the same glitz.
