i raced for a few years saved my paper boy money bought my super dream bike a schwinn brian foster pro model XS bike the alluminum frame with the billet part the bottom bracket goes into forget what its called. I had profile 3peice cranks t1000 rims with DK hubs S@M slam bars and moved to reno and never raced it my friends who raced cared more about who had the coolest bike instead of jumping or winning and i got sick of it. i never rode it more than like five times and its in the shed has been for years with faded red wheels. I had lots of bikes but one of the coolest was a white PK RIpper it was sweet...
Alex, I was a FV Boys Club local. I raced there every week. Check out http://www.vintagebmx.com. You'll be surprized at how many of us old BMX idiots are still around. The OM, Stu, Hill, Utterback and even Oz post over there semi regularly. Just hit the link and check out the site. You can thank me later.
i rode for a while and had a company building custom bmx and flatland frames and odds and ends called "BACKWOODZ BIKES" since i was 16 i got tired of it not being very profitable seeing as everyone wanted prices to be comparible to mass produced stuff. im only 24 and i really can feel the pain from all those years of riding all day every day the OLD OLD OLD website is still up www.geocities.com/backwoodz4130 zach
I rode nj nbl from like '87-'90. hit some nationals too. it was a blast. then a got my first "hot rod" ( 72 chevelle ). it was way faster than that 20". i always want to try it again for fun. pulled my bike off the hook and everything. maybe i'll pump up the tires and go for a spin sometime soon. Anyone from central nj want to join me to see how bad we can get hurt?
I started racing BMX when I was 10 and by the time I was 13 I figured out that I could fix bikes much better than win trophys. Since the age of 14 I have never had another job other than in the bike Industry. I have seen the world for free, been to 2 olympics and made lifelong friends with some of the best & fastest guys on two wheels. and I am in a band with Billy Griggs...
So Rad To See So Many Bmxers Here.... Still On My '93 Standard Lengthy...and Riding Flat On It...cuz Im A Big-boned-kid. Milwaukee (er...waukesha) Represent. Kurt.
Nice thread... Been ridin' in NJ sice 84. Still hit up some of the local parks, although I'm not as limber as I used to be... Rode NYC and Brooklyn for about 10 years also. Here's our local crew's site: www.defconfour.com -B
I *try* to ride- got a 2000 Haro Master all fixed up. But, I suck. Would love to flatland but can pretty much just bunnyhop, that's it
how many of you guys rode phillypark? i know they're not big into bikes there, but there's been a few over the years...
Yeah! that's basically the same frame as the Basic Big City Bastard, I would love to have one of those.... On a side note, if anyone has any Basic Bike Company stuff from Canada, I am always looking for parts. Right now I'm hunting a full set of the Silencer pegs, but I'm always interested in any Basic parts to whole bikes.
Again, everyone check out www.vintagebmx.com. There is a HUGE community there. Old schoolers, mid schoolers and new schoolers all post stuff regularly - including stuff up for pawn, etc. It is my favorite site online. I guarantee if you rode a BMX bike just once, you will feel as if you are home there. Just beware of the "Off Topic" section - it can get pretty heated in there. All the other forums are safe and great resources for just about everything BMX - even freestyle and dirt. Just check it out.
I collect bikes...have about a half dozen 'Gooses, an old Red Line Pro Line, an early Patterson, a few Thrusters (east coast NJ brand built in a drag racing frame factory), an '83 SE Quadangle and some other stuff along with too many parts... Cris
Kinda' funny.......I just went to a BMX race this past friday evening and I could not beleive how much everything is nowdays. I used to ride a GT back in the day. Heck, some of the "kids" had over 3G's in their bikes and they weigh less than my pair of Doc Martians. Chris Nelson Kansas
Been riding for 25 years and still going strong! We're riding a lot with a couple kids lately who are training for the Dutch olympic team and they really got us going again! Dirt only... No fuckin' street or parks, leave that to the sk8ers amongst us. I used to ride with the De Jong brothers a lot... Gave me chances to ride with guys like Todd Lyons, Mat Hoffman, Ian Morris, Mike Griffin, etc. a couple times.. Rad! I might even get back into racing again... I love it. Especially after seeing a few Transit videos!
This thread is blowing my mind. I had a sneaking suspicion that a good number of today's hotrodders and chopper freaks were yesterday's BMXers, but these rants and ramblings prove it! I'm tempted to go for hours on some 20-inch tirades of my own, but instead I'll just ask Billy Griggs' friend to tell his bandmate I said hello. My name's McGoo, and I've known Billy since his days a top expert on the national circuit in 1983. Ask old Billy how much money I used to pay him to wear Max gloves back in the day. For a 14-year-old kid, it was a lot! Watch the lights.... McGoo
Yup,me too.Webco was my first good bike. Later had a aluminum FMF Raced in the KINGDOME,some Calif.team DG guy crashed me!! My neighbor collect old BMX,loop tail PK RIPPERS etc.. Skateboarded too, still have a Alva banner in my garage and a letter he wrote me telling me to 'take a hike" when I wanted a free board.
yep count me in too. rode from 1979 to early 90's when the age thing caught up with me. was 5th in state for crusier class. still have me favortie bike of all time which is a VDC. They were built in so cal. Also have a DG frame, and PK Ripper frame as well. Remeber the days of 2 hip trick team, Eddie Foilia from GT, Ron Wilkerson from Haro, Fred Bloos from SE. Those guys kicked ass. The stuff the kids are doin now just blows me away. Man I miss riden pools. Now I would be to scared, that's what happens when you get old. HAHAHAHAHA
Raced from '84-'96 til I broke my back in a car wreck. Sponsored by CW Racing/Revcore. After recovery I got back into riding again, mostly dirt, but never raced again. Haven't been on a bike in about a year, but been planning on tossing together one of my old frames and building some trails. I could use the exercise.
OhGod I must be old.I quit BMx in 1979? I do ride in the skateparks now with my son. But I take it easy, hurts more now. I came off a bank onto a flat section, front wheel washed out, went FLYING over the bars, thought I broke both wrists.. All these kids came over while I was laying there..MISTER you ok? My boy still teases me about the time a wrecked!
Last time I took me VDC out some kids said I need to give my son's bike back to him. I don't even have any kids. Vaphead that was really funny story and I know how you feel.
YES!!!!!!!!!! How did I miss this thread? I useto race (two years ago) Went all over the place...Traveled all over the place to race my BMX. I still have my BMX bikes and ride them every now and then. But I got into touring and road rideing. Mountain rideing and BMX is where my heart is though.
Hell yeah! I still ride my Hutch XL 24" cruiser. I never raced but I just loved to ride around the hood with my buddies. Now I just ride around with my son & daughter. I just can't get rid of it since I've had it so many years. Goodtimes!
Hey McGoo, It's Jeff. the dude that used to work at Tioga. Billy says hello & thanks for the help on his down payment...
I see Dave every few months. he is doing good and the rumors of his death have been greatly exaggerated...
