Paleot, 1966-68 Mustang 8'' or Maverick 8" commonly used a 2:79 ratio rear end pretty much a bolt in swap in your '53 good gear for your Flat head.

Jeff, One quick question. Did you leave it manual or did you go automatic with the tranny.

I founded the 1952-59 Ford Social Group here on the H.A.M.B. ( https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/social-forums/1952-59-ford-social-group.282/ ) back in 2009 and over the years we created a HUGE information file with all kinds of upgrade tips so I have helped probably well over a hundred guys with swap info. My own '54 has a 302/AOD combo with a 4:10 rear gear with the AOD's .67 overdrive@ 70 MPH cruise is at about 2300 RPM.

image.jpeg If you are going to do something with the front like mustang 2 with a rack .the next step would put a 289-302 . All my fords have chev but all the car builders push ford in a ford. Good luck you have a good start . My 49 chev motor mustang front

If you own a 1952-59 Ford and want in to our Social Group you will have to "Conversation" me and I'll tell you how to join up.

Standard ratio was a 2.79 in most Mustangs and Mavericks, 3.00 was optional. In all the Maverick rears I've had, I've only ran across a 3.00 in one of them. Mustang II's and V6 Pintos could be had with 3.55, some of them were Trac loc {posi}, but were all 4 lug.
Don't overlook Fairlanes up to 67 or maybe 71. Lots of configurations there, from I6 to 428 FE's, so a good selection of ratios.

If you find a rear the right width but don't like the ratio, don't sweat it, the 8" is easy to swap the chunk, still a lot of originals out there, as well as rebuilt units that will just drop in.

I am pretty burned out on building muscle cars after 80 of them but the one thing I still like about the genre is that no one ever suggests putting a 327 in a 69 Mach 1 or a LS motor in a Super Bee. I fully expect DDDenny to post that infamous picture of the 1st gen Camaro with a flathead about now. o_O

I get the whole SBC love fest thing, this is just a real quick vent and a suggestion, it's a ford OP, maybe keep it that way? Who knows, maybe we can start a whole new trend in hot rodding, that is until we have to put Tesla motors in all of them.

My apologies to the OP for the intrusion.
Cripes, I swear you're stalking me Billy, maybe it's the other way around, weird.
Of all the threads I could have clicked on, but 53 Ford, come on, I see your name and bam, there he is again.
What's really weird is I stumbled on that very photo yesterday in one of my surfing sessions.
I've gotten away with it once or twice already so I won't push my luck.

BTW, that was a guy my older brother said he knew of in the 50's from Oregons' Willamette Valley, well known racer and engine builder Clarence Everett.

  17. Good looking engine. I would install a PCV. I see you have the aluminum spacer under the 2 bbl that has the provision for the PCV hose connection..

If you want the least expensive, easiest, most dependable, easiest to get parts for on the road,
and enjoyable cruising go with your friend's $10K engine that you can get for so much less.
It's easy to snap 53 Ford axles, so don't hammer it.

Back in the day, before they closed OCIR, there was a local racer with a beautiful fastback Mustang, called the Potent Pony, sporting a big block Chevy up front and a Chevy bow tie in the grill. Killer car....

My old 53 Ranch wagon had the original flathead in it with Fenton headers and dual smittys. 3 on the column with overdrive and for pure cruising pleasure that was a great car. I went on several 500 plus mile runs with that old car and carried nothing more than an extra set of points and the tools to change them. never needed them .
I miss that car. 65-70 on the highway was just right when she dropped into overdrive.

I had one late in HS , my first Hot Rod 53 coupe . 1 owner , black , gray and white interior . I yanked the FlatHead , in went FE 390 GT motor from my GT Fairlane , FMX Auto , 57 rear axle 3.70 ratio. It ran good , I didn’t drive it hard , just drove it . One thing to be very observant of is this model Ford , was bad for steering box removing itself from the frame , the king of rust in that area . I haven’t looked at one in years , but Crown Vic maybe something to look at and measure for a swap . Straight axle is always there also . Good Luck , they make fun cheap hot rod fun . Just remember brakes are ahead , of go goodies on my builds . Be safe to enjoy , the hobby for many years .

Had a 53 wagon when I was in high school. I COULD NOT blow it up!!! Flatheads are tough.
I vote keep it all Ford. SBF takes up the same space as SBC and you won't get dirty looks at the car shows.

Back in the day if we were not going to run the flatty the choice was a Caddy and Olds.
