The Aztec, built by Barris. Call it what you want, buts its an iconic custom that is still with us today.

As for 4-door HT's, Jack Florence (of Fostoria Customs renown) went the extra mile (or two!) with his '57.

Bailon built John Gomez '57. (Later to become the celebrated 'California Nugget').

 

One of my favorites was this two-tone green beauty, by Joe Wilhelm.
Wilhelm is not as popular as some of the other early builders, but is equal to the best.

If you are interested in custom history (why else would you be here?), research how Wilhelm factored in Kurt McCormick's brokering a deal on his Westergard Caddy. Heady stuff!



For some reason, the extra detailing on the deck lid just set the nail for me!
(EDIT: AND one of the cleanest exhaust/lakes pipe set-ups ever!)

Speaking of peaked decklids and mid 50's Chevy kustoms;

 

As a fiend for all things Tri 5, I'm starting to think the '56 is the best custom platform. Mo and Sancho's posts support this IMHO>

 

This 57 Convert (The Aztec) was a popular show car back in the 60's owned by a local Upholster Ned Couch. It is currently up for sale on Craig's List, Louisville, Ky. under 57 Chevy cars. I am in no way connected to this car, just posting pictures of it in it's hay day.

 

These two are the beez kneez!

 

Those two are actually one and the same.
The flamed version was redone in red & white.

 

I really dig this one, what mods are on here?

*Modded fins
*Frenched license plate
*Radir wheels
*1 Piece bumpers (?)

What taillights are those and how much work do you think went into those rear fins?

 

They look like Packard tails to me. The other mod is the removal of the vertical SS mounding where the 1/4 panel dips.

 

Yep, Packard Clipper.

 

Where can you pick up those tail lights and buckets? And what year Packard Clipper?

 

Originals come up on ebay but they are costly. The lenses are available as reproductions, buckets you may have to build. 1956-'58.....

The A-Bros. "Venturian" was a ground-breaker.
Interestingly, though rectangular headlights had begun to appear in Europe at the time, only round were legal in the USA.
