I sent Kiwi kev the write up from the local paper about the crash. I was very good friends with Blackwell. He moved from NC to CA in the early 1960's then moved back here in the mid 1970's. He's in a nursing home and don't know anybody. He could tell some really cool stories when he was in good health.

It is amazing to me that some of these guys walked away from these crashes. The cages today are an improvement for safety sake over the 60s rollbars and "safety equipment". The way these guys could get out of shape though made the spectating more enjoyable but at a price nevertheless. If only more of the racers had told their stories the guys today may appreciate the times even more.

Jim as you know that's why I started the Southeast Gassers Association to try and tell the story as close as i can to the way it was. I know we are not perfect by a long shot but we try to get better ever year. For an example there will NOT be any side ways carbs in the SEGA next year. Cars with non cut wheel openings will only be allowed 9 1/2" wide tires. A lot of other little things, The rules get more era correct every year.

Quain there are a number of groups out there trying to recreate the old days. It is really hard to do that with all of the improvements made to cars, safety equipment, track prep, legal safety considerations etc but in my opinion you guys are right at the top for how it was. Looking forward to next year for sure. I imagine a few new groups will try to capture that genie in the bottle but may find it is not easy by any stretch of the imagination (as you know firsthand).

Not to sound like a broken record and not to sound like I'm hinting or anything but the only thing I see missing from the SEG schedule for 2018 is a West Coast showing.
    OK, maybe a little hint.;)

It's going to take some time but the way the SEGA is growing I think we will be out there before too long.

There's a youtube video of a couple of teams towing all the way
from CA to Indy for the Nationals.
    Open trailers.
It can be done - it HAS been done.

Sorry for the late response but my notification was turned off and i didn't know this was here.
We have been contacted by a few tracks down that way but the problem is we only have 2 cars from the area. It's hard to get enough cars from our area to travel but in most cases we have 10 or 12 there in the area so if we bring 30 that's makes for a 42 or so race. Orlando is close enough but they already have some type Nostalgia show and we don't go in on anyone else market and we don't do tag along shows.
I'm working on it hard because we have big fan response from there but want to be sure they get to see a real Southeast Gasser race and not just 1/2 of it when we come.
I'm always open for idea's so let me know if y'all think one area would be better than another.

Didn't NHRA start in CA and spread? The 10 Year plan
would have Time Traveler Gassers running everywhere!
NHRA had different divisions for the parts of the country.
The rules would be the same everywhere...

  18. Haven't looked at the rules in a while. Do you still need to be a stick car to play??

Rules are on line at Southeast Gassers. Lots of updates and new classes.
3 pedals only. 2 pedals are for bicycles (from the picture on their site).

  21. Kinda funny...when I look at all my '60's magazines. Other than the camshaft war adds. The other big adds I see are B&M vs Art Carr vs Hydro Motive vs Vitar...etc. I don't see any Muncie vs T10 adds at all.

That’s kind of an apples to oranges comparison though.

The ultimate,supercharged,450+ci stroker,AA/GS,super high dollar pro race cars ran clutch hydros, but a carbureted,265ci Chevy powered weekend race car fielded by the average blue collar guy, usually ran a stick trans, because they didn’t really have anything in the way of an auto trans that was worth using.Definitely nothing like the T350/T400/C4 etc that we have these days.

It’s kinda like asking your buddy why his bracket small block Camaro doesn’t run a Lenco like the Pro Mod Camaro that’s pitted next to him.
You just have to consider the context.[emoji4]

  23. So then you agree...not All gassers were sticks. I have a friend that raced a lower class '55 Chevy in the sixties. He ran a stick than a hydro than a 400. His car progressed with the times.

I’m not going to argue with you and fuck up somebody else’s thread, bud.
Clutch hydros were the exception, not the rule. The vast majority of cars that a regular guy with a nine to five job were running were stick cars.
    You can’t re-write history.[emoji6]

There's no way that technology will slow stuff down..
The ??Hurdlee???? folks ran the first turbo Gasser and
it was untouchable... free exhaust HP vs. 100+ HP lost off
    the crank for a blower.
The problem is that the tech 'aids' made the driver's skill less
    necessary, compared to a 4-speed.
Quain Stott said it best when he was talking about his record
setting career in his Pro car...
He had the word 'RIDER' on the door toward the end...
    not 'DRIVER'.
4 speed cars using old, scary technology keep the fans on their feet...
and bring back memories to old guys like me... from the 50s and 60s.

    Hey guys,

I just on 'WANTED' but I thought this might be a good place to ask the question too:

I'm after a set of what I believe are 'Circle Racing' jelly beans but it's the flat faced ones WITHOUT the ridge. Does anyone know where I can get these? I'm after 15 x 4.5 (or 4).

    See attached pic.

I can get the 83 SERIES BILLET GASSER II's anywhere but these have the ridge.

    Thanks!

The ones you are looking for are the most sought after Mag wheels in the gasser world. Good luck, I'll keep an eye out for some, be ready to pay big tho.

About 1965 we built a '33 Willys 4 door with a 332"sbc and a push button torqflite. The plan was to make it a clutchflite when the money became available. There were no high stall converters available except the "hemi" converter. We resorted to "neutral drops" to get the car off the starting line. This was not popular with strip management. So, I guess automatics would not become popular until the high stall converter arrived on the scene.
