Lefty Mudersbach was an innovator in drag racing. His twin SBC dragster ruled So Cal dragstrips almost every weekend. We were at Lions Dragstrip when he brought his twin and blew others away. Then, yearly, he did the same thing after a few upgrades to the twin SBC dragster. The sad thing was that he left all of us too soon in a drag racing accident in the mid 60’s. His early twin will be remembered as one tough race car. Lefty?... one tough driver/builder.

We will all remember the anxiety when his twin SBC came to the line to race: the Sidewinder, the Twin-Howard Cam Special, the Dragmaster, Kenny Lindley/Don Hampton, Glen Stokey, etc. All great racers in their own right.

Lefty drove it like a lightweight, including wheelies and shifting weight… it was just a lot of power to the wheels.



Lefty Mudersbach traveled all over So Cal to race the best. His races against Jack Chrisman and the Howard Cam Twin were epic and were always the top challenges everyone was waiting for at Lions. Here are some travel races all over So Cal from 1958-60.

 

HHHmmm.Not really like Jr Dragsters, these were for Model A &B motors, with the occasional Crosley, Chevy or whatever thrown in. Basically a stocker on pump gas , though period speed stuff was allowed.
How quick and fast? Pretty quick really, for example the X/D record as of Feb 1962 was 12.42 at 107.63.
How good was that in 1962? Well, the B/G record was 12.17, C/G was 12.67.Those were gas coupes, I believe Super Stocks were not much faster than 12.00's. The A/S record was 14.06!
By the way, AA/D ( fuel ban ) was Jim Nelson in the Dragmaster with a 8.63 at 176.12.

Looks to be this 41 - 48 Ford coupe that Barris was building. Don't think I ever saw a picture of it completed though.

Thanks for the correction I knew it was either a 55 or 56 I should have checked to be sure, actually I should have known without checking my pop had a 55 sedan in the early 60's.

I always enjoy this thread. Here's two of my favorites. My question, are these for real? I know the history of the Chevy Nova,{ Triple trouble} but the girl on the hood? Photoshop? If not, shes one crazy girl. And the kid in the pedal car! Looks like something I would have tried as a kid. Lol

Well, I mean close to junior dragsters in size. Don't under estimate junior dragsters! My daughter's 7.90 car does 83.5 mph at 7.90 in 660' and will hit 90 mph at 8.90 seconds at about 720'. This is with 50 lbs' of added weight! (Total package at 440 lbs.) I have no idea what it would do in the 1/4 mile since they are only allowed to run 1/8 mile. I would bet that her car would be close to or just above 100 mph in the 1/4 mile. However, the gearing is optimized for 1/8 mile. It does 60' in 1.56 and 330' under 5.43. Pretty quick!
