In the near lane, Jim Nelson in the Oilers car club entry at Paradise Mesa. The uncropped version of this shot shows more of the markings on the airport runway. Nelson was one of the founders (and first president of the club which dated to November 1947) and after managing Masters Automotive went on to race with and later build dragsters under the Dragmaster banner with Dode Martin.

Actually it is "Heichel" . A 68 Logghe car that was painted red at the time of this photo and later purple before Carl sold it to Make Zarnock who painted it red again and ran it with a small block Chevy.

Try "Hyder, Fitzgerald and Van Steenwyck". When you posted this photo back in May Dean Lowe corrected your spelling of Fitzgerald and now you got the third name wrong as well. Glen Hyder was also partnered with Tom Koulan on this car in 1966 and it also ran as Hyder and McCloud.

John "Crazyman" Taylor at the Castlereagh strip (then known as Sydney International Dragway) near Sydney, Australia. Most likely from the 1971 Nationals event there.
I took this one of him launching on a run and if you look close at the area just ahead of the rear tire you can see the result of the fire burnout. img455.jpg

    loudbang,
Thanks for researching and posting all these old photos. It gives all of us a chance to remember the cars that created some of our best racing memories. And please, please, do not be offended when we correct some of your mis-spellings and other details. These HAMB threads have become some of the best historical documentation assembled as a compendium of racing history, and many of us realize the devil is in the details so the documentation accompanying the photos has to be correct.
    Carry on Bro.

No problem at all with corrections. That is what is great about this HAMB of ours YOU GUYS KNOW EVERYTHING somebody somewhere can name correctly the most obscure photos I find. :)

  16. Not early. The last paint on the coupe in competition. It was campaigned in this horrible color by the last owners prior to restoration, K&G Speed Center.

As noted the last time that this photo was posted the far lane is Charlie Smith's Plain Vanilla out of Oklahoma City, OK and in the near lane it is Pete Orner from Cleveland, OH. Charlie's twin brother Frank also raced, most notably with an A/C roadster.

Tom Ferraro in the Campos brothers' Lo Blow AA/FA. From loudbang's post from March of last year: "This was the final Low Blow 23 Ford T built and campaigned by the team. The altered was driven by Rick Campos, Dan Collins, and Tom Ferraro. Tom Ferraro was the best known driver of the car running a best of 7.74, 175.00 before a very bad fire almost killed Ferraro. Tom Ferraro's burn injuries earned him a place in the AMA Journal of Medicine. His burns, of 3rd degree severity, healed on their own sans any necessary skin grafting; a virtual medical anomaly deserving of recognition."

Yes there was an earlier Lil Screamer that was also a 34 Ford but it was destroyed in a fire. As far as mid 60s altereds go this car was very successful. I have read it has been restored. I never really intended to research the car but there are a pretty good number of pictures of the car and I recognize a number of cars in the backgrounds of these pics which encouraged me to make a rather thin file on the car itself.

As it looked later as the Dynamic Speed Center entry. The company (in business since 1961) still operates as Dynamic Speed and Marine in the Detroit area .
And from what I see here the car may still exist.

  27. There was a Lil' Screamer I, but I don't believe it was a '34 coupe. Wasn't a west coast car.

What I have in my file is my file is from the restoration blog of Lil Screamer as follows:

"...Ditmars began to meet drag racers, the first being Mike Spizzeri, who ran a C/A called the Purple People Eater. Spizzzeri and Ditmars took the car to the 1957 NHRA Nationals in Oklahoma City and got beat early. Two years later, Ditmars decided he wanted his own car and built his first Lil' Screamer '34 Ford altered. He ran the car from 1960 through mid-1961 with modest success at racetracks in Gary, Ind.; Union Grove, Wis.; and Oswego, Ill.; until a garage fire resulted in the car being burned to the ground." ...

the in regards to Lil Screamer II ...

"I again was working at a body shop at the time painting cars, and I had gotten to know a guy named Herb Moller," he said. "Little did I realize that Herb would become a lifelong friend and that he would be racing with me from 1962 until I quit in 1973. "I wanted another Lil' Screamer, and He, I, George Little, and a number of other guys used to come to the body shop and work on the new '34 Ford altered. The car was finished in late 1963, and the thing started to really run early the next year." ...

Not sure what Roo is referring to on the Dynamic Fiat but I do remember this car as it ran at the local Detroit tracks. In the 60s my favorite group of cars were the Midwest Auto out of Berkley. Dave Kanners, Sam Gianino, Al Maynard and Bob Schaeffer and Butch Elkins all ran with Midwest sponsorship (among others and Midwest was owned by Ron Reader and I have spoken to him about the cars -probably should call him again). Wally Booth and Dick Arons also all ran in the same Woodward crowd. They switched between Midwest and Standard Auto Electric sponsorship and Wally Booth ran his 66 Chevelle with Dynamic sponsorship in the 66/67 era (prior to his green Camaro sometime in 68) and I thought the Dynamic Fiat was running in the same time frame as Booth in 66/67 in the blue livery(although my memory has played a few tricks on me in the past). I thought Bob Schaeffer was doing a lot of the engine building for some of the Midwest guys until some leaned maybe a bit more heavily on Dynamic in the late 60s-I believe. Lil Screamer ran until the end of the 67 season from what have found in the Lil Screamer file.

The restoration photos I have of the car show they are very similar as to how it ran in 66/67 I believe.
