Projects Almost Funny - AWB Barracuda Funny Car Build

I'll bet you won't have $18K in yours as a roller. I get historic value and nostalgia but it's really just an old car. Probably can't just drop a drive line in it and go racing.
I'd think $1800 would be closer to the real value.
But, I'm a CHEAP ***!

 

I see a lot of value in it as an historic artifact. But it's not the car I need to start with...hopefully someone will restore that car to how it was. But it won't be me.

 

I got my new CAD software.

 

Jim, I think you're ahead of the curve on this one. Early Funny Cars were always evolving and that's what made them so interesting. This build will be Fun to watch!

Ive got the same cad drawing machine but with new enhanced "iD-iOT interface .
The only thing is..if you leave it switched on too long it starts drawing rude pictures and slogans, "they" who ever they are ..******ed up the programming.
It works very well....sometimes...lol

I've been cheating and using the calculator, but I do have a coupe slapsticks.

I'm closing in on the frame design. I'm waiting to get the front axle all figured out, first, since that will kind of tell me how far apart the rails want to be.

I found a block today, hopefully it will do what I want.

Also bought some steel to start mocking up the frame. It might take a couple tries to get it right.

 

Build it out of wood 2x4's first. Cheaper to cut up and redo!

 

That's how I did the t-bucket frame and Henry J, it's a great visual too.

 

I did that on the other frame I built, which was over 20 years ago...thanks for reminding me!

I got a steering gear today, from a guy in Tucson who's parting out a couple early Corvairs. I got started on fixing it...took it apart, half cleaned it, and poked a hole in the threaded plug. I need to order some parts for it, the two seals, and a 15/16" freeze plug.

I also got my brake parts. Less than $100 for the rear drums, wheel cylinders, shoes, and hardware. A bit heavier than discs, but I think they'll do the job, and definitely will look the part. But I'm planning on modern discs up front...not much I can do about that.

What rear wheels are you going to run Have a set of 11/16 American bearclaw that they used on 70's funny cars that has never had a tire mounted on them

 

I'm going with smaller wheels. I might get some 15x9s.

I saw the Landy brake pic on the other thread, and got a chuckle out of it. I'm going to have front brakes, too, so hopefully won't be cooking the shoes like he did.

 

What block did you find? Those old steering boxes sure stink when they get opened up.

 

I got an iron block, I think it's from the early 90s.

I thought you would run spindle mounts

 

You can run brakes on spindle mounts. Its a drag week rule to have brakes on all four wheels.

 

There are a lot of neat things I could do, but I probably won't...such as spindle mount front wheels.

I'm getting into "let's get this car built" mode now. It won't be as wild as lots of us hoped for.

 

It's about time you get in the garage and start building! Everybody here has built your car twice, in their heads!

 

Make it fast, cool and most of all safe. The rest will take care of itself. It's always more fun to hop up a running, driving car than looking at yard art until it's perfect.
