1959 Riverside Raceway
Hello,

In early 1958, my brother and I had thoughts of building a Model A for drag racing in the gas coupes and sedan class. The look was going to be streetable but powerful for the drags. The stance was going to be similar to this red Model A we saw at Riverside Raceway a months later in 1959. But, by the time we found a nice Model A hidden in some weeds in our Long Beach neighborhood, my brother’s thoughts were already moving on to a fast, new 1958 348 Impala. So, after we fiddled around and got the Model A running, we sold it to partially fund the 58 Impala.

When we saw this red Model A in the A/ Gas class at Riverside Raceway in 1959, our thoughts were immediately drawn back to the old Model A we found and got running. Our original idea for a drag racing car that went by the wayside. But, we looked at each other and said… “maybe get another one and build it?” The look for the street and the drags is unmistakably very cool...

If our final mystery project looked and ran like the red Model A from Riverside Raceway in 1959, we would have been extremely happy. But, on the other hand, we were very happy with our 40 Willys choice for B/Gas and finally, C/Gas.

Junji, I believe that is Joe Pisano's Model A before the deep maroon paint job and Halibrands.

No wonder we liked that Model A coupe...Joe Pisano was a big name in drag racing. His cars in the later 60s were well done. These are the only Model A photos I could find in my search. No one had a photo of the red version in 1959 at Riverside.

That short clip of the red Model A kept my brother's conversations about another gas coupe build going for a while. It was the "look" that kept the conversations going. But, in the end, it was too traumatic.
1961
Joe and Frankie Pisano’s ’29 Ford was among the prettiest gas coupes to date, metallic maroon with smoked Plexiglas windows, gold wheels, and lots of louvers (note “see-through” inner fender).

Most people think I did the top like that on purpose. So they start to grumble about it.
Not realizing that’s how it came from the factory.
Obviously I opted to not go with the stock material.

I feel your pain, MOST PEOPLE don't know a lot about Model A's and as the population ages it will only get worse.

A REAL GOOD LOOKER,
when you lowered it did you use stock steering gear? what does the drag link look like now?
are you using the "stock' wishbone connection? how low is it to the ground? pictures?

 

This is one I'm working on. It's on a 32 frame so I made the rear fenders. The fronts are rough. I almost have the left side patched up. This is how I left it today.
