Creature From the Black Lagoon...

After our dad took us to see this horror movie, photos like these scared the living $#!+ out of our family. My dad took us to see this movie at our neighborhood Sante Fe Theater and afterwards, we all could not sleep soundly for weeks. My mom would not take us to the Long Beach Colorado Lagoon near the Marine Stadium, just because it was named “Lagoon.”

The Colorado Lagoon was in Southwest Long Beach, just bordering on Belmont Shore. It was a fun place to go for a picnic, but the water was such poor quality that most parents kept their children away for fear of some disease or ??? (we were renaming it the Black Lagoon after watching the movie, but it was not salt water)

We grew up playing in the river bed of the Los Angeles River that flows out to ocean at the Long Beach Harbor. (3 blocks from our house) So, that water was blue, but somewhat yucky. Comparing it to the Colorado Lagoon was simple. The lagoon had a hard time being flushed daily with new water other than street runoffs. (It was once connected to the ocean via the Marine Stadium, but since closed off to salt water.) The LA River was still, until the next big rain, but trickling out to the ocean. At the lagoon, the bottom mud just squished between your toes and no one we knew ever went in above their knees. Your ankles and feet looked like you were wearing muddy boots, when you came out of the water.

Yes, we all wanted to get fully covered up with that yucky mud at the Colorado Lagoon and be the “Creature From the Black Lagoon.” But, that water was just not conducive to our health. So, we were content to run around with our muddy boots until our parents made us wash it off. Jump up all the way to 2002 when the city spent nearly $3.5 million, dredged, cleaned up the Colorado Lagoon, and refilled it with good water. Then it was able to be listed as a California body of water, certified by the state.

But, we old folks, today, would not let our grandkids play near or in that water…just old memories that linger. Even though, we knew the Creature From the Black Lagoon was just an ordinary guy dressed up as a monster. We still were not allowed to go into that yucky water. So, maybe now, that creature is the “monster hiding under our beds…?”
