Hot Rods I think i was being tried to be scammed yesterday

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Bruce Fischer, Jan 13, 2018.

  1. You are correct with your additions.

But not on the ***umption, My points were to keep your personal and everyday account info out of disclosure and remain personal.

A bank wire transfer is one of the hardest things to defraud or undo.

Discretion is the better part of something or another. If you’re getting a bad vibe, walk away. It’ll sell to somebody when the right buyer comes along.

A few years back I sold a car to a guy in New Zealand. His agent in CA handled everything. I had a price, they liked it, were quick to act, all went well. Have a phone convo with his ppl in AZ and then make the final decision. A sale's a sale in a slow moving marketplace. And as always trust your instincts, but on the surface it seems like you could invest a little more "safe" time into this gig and come out the winner. That's actually the kind of car Euros like. Good luck.

I've sold many cars in Japan and Europe. As long as the buyer wires the money to your bank account there's no problem. I have a special account just for wiring money and I move it out as soon as it arrives. All my overseas buyers have arranged for transportation either themselves or thru a broker. To date I've never had a problem

  7. TTR. Fea bay discussion board used to be real nice and there were a bunch of us that talked about car and anything else. Then new Mods. came in and changed everything Most of the old crowd have left and moved to face book. Its like a desert now over there. Just new bees *****ing about E bay all the time. Thats why I came to the H.A.M.B. years ago. Every one is decent here and very helpful when you have a car problem and you can say almost any thing you want to here.Bruce.

I wouldn't let that be a red flag, it's exactly how I sold my '42 to a guy in Sweden, beside the pics and description I had up, he asked a few more Q's and wired me the money.
When I asked him if he was going to have someone look it over first, he said he didn't know anyone in the area and it would just add to the cost. He went on to say "there aren't too many '42 Ford PU's over here..."

I never tell a potential Buyer of something for a good amount of money", even a scammer, that I won't do business with them. I just tell them I only deal in cash handed to me at my bank and counted & checked by someone from the bank.

  13. I have bought a few cars from Australia and at first the buyer probably wasn't sure about me. It takes a big deal of trust on both ends. I send money to another country and hope he follows through. Some transactions can't be done face to face but with the banking system now you can be covered if you sell the car in England. There is a big demand for our stuff in Europe. I wish I had acess to a 1934 Peugeot.

I was involved in a deal on Craigslist where the buyer was willing to pay me upfront for some items I had. He was going to have some freight agent pick up the items. He overnighted me a cashiers check from a legitimate bank ( I checked ) but the check was $400 over the price we agreed on. He called me to see if I had gotten the check and when I asked him what the extra money was for, he said that I should give it to the person picking up the items. Supposedly that person was going to need the money for expenses. I told him that I wouldn't be involved with a third party deal and returned the check to the company name on the return address on the envelope. I looked up the company and it was legit. Then I called the company and they said that someone had been using their company name to run scams. They had notified the USPS but nothing had come of it.

  15. Last year I sold a car that became so valuable I had decided there was no way I should own it. Of course the buyer was gonna be in my little country town. Talked with my banker about doing a transfer and she said that I would need to keep the car/***le for 2 days after the transfer comes through. She said that there is a period of time that it could be reversed—- and the money ****ed back out. I’m not a banker and I can’t gaurantee this but better safe than sorry. Good luck Bruce

Bruce, it's your car and you don't have to do any deal, much less one that you have reservations about. Some folks take all the h***le in stride while others don't need the aggravation. I'm the latter type. If you call about my ad and can't communicate with me so I clearly understand, we're done. If you start negotiating the price down when you haven't seen the car, we're done. If you start with the "special arrangements", we're done. Not doing a deal isn't gonna turn my life upside down, there is always another buyer and usually a more comfortable deal.
Years back I had way too many cars and I wanted to pay off my mortgage before I retired. I had a friend who was an avid eBay seller. I offered him a commission on the sale of each car with the stipulation that I would have no contact with the buyers. I wrote him detailed descriptions of the cars and gave him all the photos he wanted. Four cars went down the road for more than I expected and all I had to do was talk to my friend. A REALLY good way to go.
I won't go into how I feel about our rare and vintage cars leaving the country.

I'm not sure if it's related or not but I'm selling some non HAMB items on Craigs list and I don't have my phone number , only a response though their email service. I keep getting responses such as "send phone number this is Dennis,Eric, Chris, etc" and a phone number to call. I did have one follow up with several emails and finally sent my phone number to never hear from them. I am getting a lot of unsolicited phone calls, or robo calls though.

  19. Thanks for all your comments guy. I have a fellow in Nashville T.N. that want to trade a wagon. Now that's 3 and a half hours away but closer than England and he willing to drive over to see mine 56 chrysler, until that happens I will keep driving her. Thanks again. Bruce.

You really believe Ryan is able to get your money back from a scammer? Aint gonna happen! Yes he can ban the scammer but that's it. The seller is the one who has to pursue any legal action.
Plus you are severely limiting your sales opportunities if you limit it to the Hamb only. In the past 3 years my sales here have fallen dramatically from what they had been. Craigslist ads have been much more productive and I'm speaking of out of state sales, Penn. Mo., Fla, Co. to name a few.

Sounds like this very well could all be legit. But if you don't feel right about it, or it seems like more h***le than you'd like, then don't deal with him.

As for him e-mailing rather than calling, he is in England, calling from there is expensive. He has called you three times, he was cut off once and had to leave a message the other two times. I reckon it seems from his end that calling you on the phone may not be a very reliable way to contact you.
