I don't remember which day it was, maybe Sunday, beautiful sunny and clear Oregon winter day. Did you see how spectacular snow covered Mt. Hood looked?

The first attached photo is a great shot of Sam Hanks in the Jones & Maley Kurtis roadster in 1956. Hanks finished 2nd in spite of a spin early in the race. And I believe that is mechanic George Salih 3rd from the right. This is the car that spent over four decades sitting on the roof of the Safety Auto Glass Company in downtown Indianapolis. It was even blown off of the roof once in a tornado. The car is in California now being restored to the configuration shown in the photo.

The man with the early midget (circa 1935 maybe?) is Charlie Allen and the car is one of many that bore the Southern California Plating name. I've seen the name quite a bit in old photos of both race cars and customs but I've never figured out just how the plating company fit in as a car design business which it also was apparently. Rootie, do you happen to know more about the So. Cal. Plating business?

    Thanks for posting.

I can't think of his name at the moment, but doesn't the " C " in C & R Radiators own the Jones and Maley car ?

California is a surprise, I figured it would get restored in Indy.

Chris Paulsen ("C" in C & R) and Gary Schroeder are the new owners with the car being restored in the Schroeder shop (steering, torsion bars, etc. ) in Burbank.

Edit: I asked around and I'm now hearing that the car did initially go to California for the start of restoration (suspension, engine, driveline, etc.). However, apparently the car is now back in the Indy area for bodywork, tanks, and other sheet metal type pieces. Remember that the car as it sat on the roof for all of those years had nothing but a frame and a much damaged body. The wheels were just kind of hung in place for looks.

I don't know a whole lot more than you do. They were quite prolific sponsors of race cars and were also involved in the prewar SoCal hot rod/custom scene. Besides chrome plating I believe they may have done metal shaping and built race car bodies and custom body work but I'm not sure. I suspect there's probably some SoCal historians on here that could elaborate.
