Mark, I (think) the shifter on your display may have been changed, not positive though.
I'm thinking it may have had the first design shifter originally, the YoYo ???
Are there any visible dates on the display?
This shot shows the "roll pin" that switches out the patterns.

I guess it could have been changed, but the shifter body says “dual pattern “[IMG]

After reading your reply just now, I went to Hurst site and the only mention I found of lube was a recommendation to not lube the unit because of attracting dust and dirt as my friend said.
What is "CMD" lube? Gonna try a readjustment first, but I'm wondering if the if the shifter unit I have is the correct one for the transmission and that's my problem?
I just know it's way too stiff.

Thx DDDenny. Still sorta wondering if all the shifter units are the same or if I need one particular unit. Will call Hurst next week.

  7. The number of my Dual Gate is 332556. I bought it new in 1968 for my Chevy Cameo. Because I wasn't doing any racing, I never changed to use the inline feature either.
I did have another brand that used a different, Vertical H pattern, on my Buick powered 47 Chevy. I loved it. It was spring loaded, and you had to push down and forward to shift into low. It was a quick pull from low to 2nd.
I still have a brand new Comp Plus shifter that I bought in 1970, and I intend to use it on my super T 10.

Here's an unopened Hurst Shifter Lube, I picked it up years ago when one of the chain auto parts stores was going out of business. I got there toward the end of the sale but scored this and a bunch of Holley gaskets and small parts. DSCN3309.JPG DSCN3311.JPG DSCN3312.JPG DSCN3314.JPG

^^^^^ Thx Fordors. I would think I could accomplish pretty much the same thing with just about any good light bodied grease and a Q tip. Going to try it at least!:D

An old thread I know, but do you have a pic of the shifter at the floor Alfin32? I've just bought one for my 40, but it seems to stick out the floor a long way..

  11. You have a combination of the shifter mechanism too high out of the floorboard and the bench seat down lower than a seat the shifter was designed for. (There may be something wacky there. Without more photos of the details, it's hard to say more.) That first 90 degree dogleg at the bottom, right above where the 2 bolts are, should be tucked under the bench seat when the lever is pulled back all the way. The seat cushion should set between the upper and lower bends in the lever. That lever you have was used a lot in the 1960's in the Chevy Chevelle and other GM mid-size with bench seats.

If you don't want to change your set up then you need to just change your shift lever to something like these shapes.........

Good to see you here from across the pond. Don't be shy about showing more photos of your vehicle. :)

Thanks Shift Wizard. The mechanism is a bit high, but that's down to putting a t5 in a 40 ford, and is where it's landed. The seat is back as far as it will go to miss the shifter base, and therefor also as low as it will go, but this is about the right distance for my legs, all though it does feel rather low, but I cant see me raising it enough to cover the base, plus I have a hurst quick shift for the box, which will raise the stick even more!! I'm thinking I need the top stick you posted, but having just splashed the best part of £150 on this one, I'm kind of reluctant to just get another. One option may be to lift the seat (its low as I said) and modify the seat frame to go over the shifter, is that work worth another £150?? Some thinking to be thunk. As for more pics of my 40, its a project, and there's a build thread in my signature, but here's a pic or two..as I bought it after it was imported, and then with dropped axle fitted and off to my mate Marco's for engine, box, rear suspension mods and floor. There's one pic so you can see where the t5 sits in the chassis, taken during the install, this is not the finished job, but that's where it sits. Will finally have kidney bean Hals on the front, & 8" steels on the back, its a long journey.

  13. I thought it might be a T5 type trans, with the lever pivot high on top and not like the ol' school style shifters that mount low on the side. That explains a lot about why it's a bit janked up. I agree you had to pay dearly for your present shift lever but perhaps you could re-sell it and recover a lot of your cost.(?) The examples that I showed you should be somewhat less than the first one so with a little Gypsy horse trading you may not do too badly.

You seem to be going at it the right way by adjusting the seat height and distance so you can reach the controls comfortably and have a good view down the road as well as the dash, etc. The shift lever ( and perhaps a different leather/rubber boot to cover up better) should be the last piece of the puzzle. The shift lever and knob are the center piece of the interior. You don't want to skimp there. Good luck on your build and Happy Highways, my friend.

This shifter has been in the car since the 70's. I paid $5 for shifter and paid the junk yard $15 for the shift rods, made my own bracket (on the third bracket trying for better ergonomics). IMG_1652.JPG

  17. I've got CRS real bad but I do remember a Cartoon in one of the Mags from back in the '60's, Hot Rod, Rod and Custom, what ever, but it was a scene in the Pits at a dragstrip, two guys were working on there hotrod, one dude says to the other, "Hey look, there goes George Hurst"! A guy walking by looked pretty normal except for his Massive, Rippled, Bulging Right arm, the left one was just a twig. I can't remember what I did yesterday but I remember that Cartoon!!

  22. Hurst and an Olds motor. No quite a Hurst/Olds but maybe still kinda Badass? I don't think George would mind the decal on the quarter windows. IMG_20181019_171622.jpeg IMG_20180928_134545.jpeg IMG_20180626_092046.jpeg

Many thanks to Butch (56sedandelivery) for his assistance!

A friend that drove a refuse truck found a box of these about 40 years ago. I had a half dozen or so, but they are all gone except this one-

  25. This one I bought for my '65 Belair in 1978 and it ran me $149 at the time. Quite valuable and sought after according to the guy that rebuilt my Muncie. It had to be tweaked to clear the bench, it was perfect with the Belair bench seat.

True Story. I was in High School in Philly and a buddy said lets take a ride one afternoon to see where these New Hurst shifters are made. We went up to I believe Abington, PA and they had one set up on a display. To our amazement they demonstrated the positive shifting by swinging a baseball to shift. gears! Blew my mind as a 17 year old motorhead. Mantuajohn

No automatic shifter in the world like the Hurst Autostick I!

I had one in my 64 Pontiac and I'm piecing one together for the Turbo 400 in my 69 el Camino...

***** Its finished and I'm loving it.********

Heres what the gates are like.. This shifter has a very positive and smooth feel. It gives the driver a feeling of confidence when shifting. You always know exactly were your at as far as gears go..
I have no idea why they quit making this shifter.

1965, my best friend's older brother came home with a brand new Belvedere 383, 4spd, w/bench seat. Inside lurked the baddest shifter I'd ever seen (even to this day, still my favorite Hurst). This thing was a weapon in capable hands!
