Customs Yes I’ve done this before please humour me !

  1. The only way I would consider the t bird is if I was planning on customizing the crap out of it.
The ref one is already a cool looking driver.

    Merc.

I built a 66 Tbird a long time ago and it was a nice car. It was also a pain to work on, and hard to sell in stock trim. They do have a glorious cockpit for cruising, but good luck keeping all that stuff working 100%. I had a hate/love relationship with thar car.

  3. The diff is noisy
Said he had his mechanic look at it and it needs axle bearings
Not a big deal, but he bought a new mustang and parked this thing.
Seems honest said we could take it to the local shop for an inspection etc.

I was thinking on the merc loose the center consol, different wheels and lowered ... maybe bell flowers ?

Disc brake and duel master cylinder swap. Drive the pizz outta it and maybe a 4 speed swap in the future.

The engine according to the owner is a 352 with a 2 speed trans. 2 barrel carb.

The third is clean needs rear leafs .
I know all about ford unibodies and rot
If they start getting soft it’s basicly a parts car as fixing them is big cake.
It’s also a clean running driving car
It would get a wheel swap and lowered as I don’t know what else you can do to them.

What I like about both is parts are pretty well available. I know the bird for trim and interior things get expensive

Going to go look at the merc on Monday

  4. Having worked on a thunderbird I can tell you if you have any electrical problems it is a full blown nightmare and parts are expensive.

    We restored this one. HRP

Both look like Fair Deals, but I've never seen that year Montclair, so for sheer rareness, I'd go with the Montclair.
T Birds are cool, but they're everywhere.
In fact, I'd be a Player for the Merc, if you pass on it!

Another vote for the Merc. When have you seen another one? I'd rock it just the way it is, but I'd get rid of one of the shifters.

Axle bearings are easy to check, just jack the rear and shake the tires on each side. A loose bearing will have much more slack in it. Like somebody said, a rebuilt chunk and a set of axle bearings and you're done.

I think I'd go with the Merc, 64 T-Bird doesn't do anything for me. The Merc is a little unusual and appears to be in good shape, rebuilding a 9" isn't that big of a deal.

I know the T Bird interiors are cool, but that one's beat. New plug wires to get it running and not much else? Have they been driving it w/o an air cleaner lid?

Merc is way cooler, however I think the price is pretty steep. I'd offer $4000. How long has it been for sale? How many people are in the market for a 64 Merc? I'd expect to be doing a lot of mechanical work on it.

Well it looks like the people have spoken... go with the Big M. TBirds are everywhere not the Merc. Looks to be an easier job. Kinda Galaxie with a touch of class. Cragars for wheels, maybe some white lettered tires and remove the poser shifter/console while the diff is being down. Couple of weekends and hit the gas. Oops, gotta wait until the snow is gone!

The old man had a '64 Bird just like the one pictured, 'cept the interior was a light silver/blue. Beautiful car. Traded it in on a new fastback hipo Mustang. :D
    I'd go for the Merc.

  13. Mercury hands down. I had a '64 Montclair with the breeze way and it was the smoothest road trip machine ive had.

I've had Tbirds and full body cars. Tbirds have small trunks. If you want to carry chairs, cooler a full size spare to shows or road trip it won't fit it a Bird. Also the Bird doesn't ride as good due to the front suspension. Everything for a Bird costs more. The Montclair is essentially a Galaxie. I love the unique looks and style. You can easily install a Galaxie XL bucket seat interior. The diff is CHEAP. You can install any 28 spline pumkin from any Ford from 50's - 90's. The only downfall is the chassis of that era are known to rot. You must check them carefully. You can drop the Montclair , install new wheels/tires and have a sweet uncommon ride. For those who call it a boat remind them 427 Galaxies were NASCAR and drag champions. If I had the opportunity I'd buy the Montclair.

the merc. to me, that generation was one of the best. hate that top on the t-bird.

  18. These years Mercs weren't slouches in NASCAR either.... Parnelli Jones and Bill Stroppe did rather well with them.

  21. The T Bird looks nice but I would go with the MERCURY! Bruce.

  22. Grab the Merc!!!

  23. I would love to customize a Tbird but that one looks blah. I like the Merc. Here is my custom project dodgegrill.jpg

  24. I thought all Montclairs had the breezeway roof and the fastbacks were Marauders. What's the real difference?

  25. The 'Marauder' roof was available on all three lines; the Monterey, Montclair, and Park Lane. The actual Marauder 'package' came with the roof, but was a separate trim package.
