As Much As We Strive To Serve You Fresh, Unpublished Pictures, We Went With This One Even After NHRA Museum Curator Greg Sharp Advised That It Had, Indeed, Made Car Craft’s Dec. ’57 Nationals Coverage For Earning The CC Top Speed Award. However, Those Guys Neglected To Name The Smoker Hitchhiking With Art Arfons. We Asked Shari And Tim Arfons To Correct That Oversight. Tim Recognized Dale Arfons, Walt’s Brother And Art’s Stepbrother. A 1,650ci Rolls Royce Merlin Pushed Green Monster 11 To 152.54 Mph, A New NHRA Record.

    Hello,

This sleek race car is one of the most innovative competition machines from the first time we saw it show up at Lions Dragstrip. The original Joe Mailliard/Paul Nicolini version was one of a kind. You can just hear that motor and chain rumble on the first fire up in the pits.

Joe Mailliard had his race shop just 4 blocks from our Long Beach house. We were lucky to be able to bicycle down to his shop to buy our Drag News papers and see what race cars were in the shop, weekly. But, the surprise was when we saw this Sidewinder firing up in the pits at Lions.

From 1958-60 when we were very active in drag racing, we were impressed with the sound, the look and the way it just took off down the strip. For Jack Chrisman, driving the Sidewinder, the "wins" just came naturally. They had some great races at Lions that I was able to capture on film during this time period. The Sidewinder had some epic races with the top racers of the day, Mickey Brown, Dragmaster, Lefty Muddersbach, Howard Cam Twin, and Kenny Lindley/Don Hampton, etc.

The sound clip was added last year when I edited my silent films with the 1959 Sidewinder sound from an LP album of drag racing sounds from the Detroit Nationals. The film: Lions Dragstrip 1959, the sound: 1959 Detroit Nationals, just like being there watching and listening.
    Turn it up!

Always neat to see these 210 hardtops, I had a BelAir in high school and thought the sun set on them, but I really changed my focus.

  24. Excellent group of Corvairs @swi66, but you forgot my Dad's '61. I look for my family in this thread every morning. It's the only time I get to see them now. Thanks again to all who make this a great way to wake up in the morning! 1961 Carvair 4.JPG 1961 Corvair 1.jpg 1961 Corvair 2.JPG 1961 Corvair 3.JPG 1961 corvair 5.JPG 1961 Corvair.jpg

I have heard that you have to modify the pulleys to prevent the belt from slipping off and special freeze plugs to stop the oil leaks.True?
