An interesting photo of Esther Vukovich after Bill's 1954 500 win. Notice that the hood has been removed and the spark plug wires are off which likely means that Frank Coon (co-chief mechanic) has already broken loose the plugs while the engine was still warm. In fact, it looks like he may have actually broken the plug on the third cylinder (or maybe it's just lying loose in the hole). The oil is really leaking around the lower cam box; to my knowledge there were never any gaskets used on that part of the Offy. Mostly they just smeared shellac on the surfaces and torqued the bolts. Also, notice the towel covering up the fuel injection manifold on the right side. Travers and Coon were among the very first to use velocity stacks on their Hilborn injection and were hiding them with the towel. Most other teams were still just running straight hoses through the side to cooler air. The Vukovich crew never opened the hood outside of their garage and removed the injector stacks every night with the doors closed and locked them up. Vukovich was a great driver but he had a couple of equally great mechanics that really made things click.

May be of interest to some here about Traco

Anyone familiar with postwar racing activity in America will recognize Jim Travers as the “TRA” half of TRACO−the largest, most prolific and respected race engine supplier to elite competitors of the USRRC, Trans Am, Can Am, Formula 5000 series, Pikes Peak and other racing series throughout the sixties and seventies. The “CO” in TRACO belongs to Travers’ partner Frank Coon, a gifted mechanic and energetic partner who along with Jim rode an unprecedented tidal wave of engine building success that dominated American racing circles for three decades.

Maggie, I'll see your gas station B-17 and raise you two more.

Neither one lasted long; the Minnesota plane was eventually cut up and the back half became a tornado shelter before it was dug up again and used to restore another plane. The second was one of three that were intended to become a chain of bomber-themed gas stations, but ended up as landfill. One of them may be buried at a former clay pit at the corner of 10th Street and Villa in Oklahoma City - which is still a vacant lot.

    Anybody got a shovel?:D
