I know it came out of a big Dodge truck, but some of the numbers are conflicting. It’s either a 57 325 or a 58 315. The number stamped in the block says it’s a 58 317. The number cast into the block next to the valley says it’s a 57 325. The numbers cast into the heads say 58 315. How can I tell for sure? Thanks in advance.

Trucks did not use 325 engines.....largest in Dodge based were 315. The
L8D5 engine code is a truck version. Casting numbers can be deceptive as the same base casting was sometimes used with differing bore and/or stroke for particular versions.

1D0635D6-71D8-4F7E-A2C1-0F4C13F32644.jpeg Thanks! Well then it looks like I have a 1958 315. Another question. What manual trans will bolt up to the stock bel housing? I’m thinking about running an A833 4 speed behind it. It’s all going in a 48 Ford F1 Shop Truck project.

take the picture of the bellhousing from the back, so we can see the transmission bolt pattern more clearly?

Does “bizarre” mean ‘tough’, well built’, ‘rugged’? :D

That particular bellhousing is an easy adapt for the A-833.
Kerry, among others on this site, have made their own adapter in there own shop...here is a pic of Kerry's piece that he posted on an earlier thread:

Keep your plate thin enough so that the bearing retainer can still register in the bellhousing. You might have to modify the hole diameter.
If you have the time/energy you could also pile up some weld material/brass and make new bosses for the trans mounting bolts on the top. Without the plate like Kerry's you would then need 'something' for the bottom bolts...I have seen where a piece of common angle iron was bolted to the bottom of the bell.

Thanks 73RR! I will comb through Kerry’s posts. I remembered reading a thread about 833’s a while back, but couldn’t remember who it was that posted it.

no doubt....but it is Chrysler based, not Dodge based.
