I have decided to take the 57-64 pontiac rear in my model A coupe to the next level. I called Fabcraft and ordered the complete Trophy Track chunk, case and all. Posi and 410 gears with all the race stuff, including 31 spline competition eliminator chrom-moly axles, bearings. steel plate axle retainers etc... Here are some pics. The rear is disassembled and being prepped for the new set up. I will post more pics when the big part get here, in a week or two. They are making the axles and building the diff. now.
Good deal, Mikey. Sure is more fun to buy upgraded race parts than to replace blown up shit. Extra points for the Olds rear, too! The 9'' in mine needs a pinion support. The only stock part left in the pumpkin, I'm afraid of blowing the pinion out of it. Unsure if I need an AL or steel one.
These are the axles that are being made. They will have extra thick flanges, large dia. bearings, and screw in 3 .5 wheel studs.
the heart of the diff. will have four spider gears with intersecting cross-shafts. And a vintage gear and pinion.
Yep, that should bout do it! This appears to be a very custom rear end. Interesting. Hope it all works out and keep it fun! Dan
Been there and done that with a 62 and a 64 Olds rear end. There are so many more choices today, stronger, less costly. This is one instance where I moved forward with time. Good luck to you though in your endeavor. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The pontiac rear is a bit expensive, but it has been in the car since it was raced in the 60s and the housing is modified for the car, so it is only right that it remain in the car. It is part of the cars history as a drag strip warrior from the past. The carrier in only slightly beefed up configuration has served me well for over 10 years of pretty severe beatings, and it is still fine. This new set up should be near bomb proof. These rears have always been super tough, it has proved that to me many times.
Very nice, hope to see it at the Showdown. I'm still relying on the little 8" in mine but I don't have nowhere near the horses you guys are pumping out. The Olds rear was a pretty common site on the drag strip back in the day.
What is it worth to you to find out, LOL. Car has seen in the 9 s. also this car , when I have my act together has a bad a@$ 60 foot. But there again many factors come into play when drag racing one of these old short wheel base cars. Some one has said to me , I need to carry a pair of shorts and TP when going full out.
OK,OK Salt, I do not want a big debate started here. You may be right, but the pontiac guys and gasser guys from back in the the day ? Well .....
Still wonder when "back in the day" was, I had a 5.38 Olds/Pontiac in my 65 Malibu in 1973/74, that's HAMB kosher right? Drove it to PIR once, those big Purple Hornies were scareeeming!
The next car is getting one also. My car owner is kinda funny about putting a Ford part in his Chevy.
Almost anybody can stick in a 9 inch and one of those chunks from summit that is supposed to handle 600+ HP. But I have seen those scattered all over the launch pad more then once . Nothing against the Ford 9 inch. I have run them as well.
@mad mikey and the Monster Hotrod...this racing stuff is an addiction/huge passion. I'm just happy to start the Ole Hotrod up and go for a ride...Have you any video of your Coupe in action I'd like to see it......and the Coupe being a former racer you must have got the bug just sitting in it the first time.
I have some older vid, before the blower motor, but need some new vid. Hoping to get my one man pit crew to get some this coming season. However he has a attention span of 3 seconds LOL. We need a GoPro bad!
For me it would be the 60's. I have trouble remembering pre and post womb. My memory kicks in at about 4 or 5 I believe.
Has the housing been checked for alignment of the axle bearings to the differential with all the welding that was done with the added brackets?
The trophy track center is on its way, and the axles almost done. Got new brake shoes, spring kit, and machined/turned my drums today.
