Interesting to read about things you don't have or understand. What is a USB port and how does is screw up other cars? If it can screw up BMW & Audi drivers I want one. Bob

To answer you directly, No. I read a map, or my navigator does, and allow extra travel time. As a result I get to see country I hadn't planned on seeing and get to meet a lot of fine folks I wouldn't have otherwise met along the way.
    I have a friend that travels with a GPA....or that is what his wife calls it and the result is something like this;
' Donnie, GPA says we should have exited back there...'

I did drive from Burbank to Whittier with GPS by myself in my daughter's car she set up the gizmo. Got to visit a friend I hadn't seen in 40 years, IF they made the thing with one button to push for RETURN it really would have been useful. Got back on my own no map, sun still sets in the West. In 1962, seems to me gas was 19 cents a gallon and a pack of Camels or Lucky Strikes, before there were filters, was a quarter. Today, gas is averaging 14 times as much as in 1962 and Marlboro's are 18 times as much. Our vices have always cost us much more than our necessities.

All our cars have two lighter plugs. One in the glove box and one vertically behind the centre of the dash so essentially invisible.

I use vintage maps when I go anywhere. half the roads are not on them, so it really makes for an adventure.

When these thing first came out at a reasonable price a whole bunch of folks used suction cups to mount them on the inside of the windshield. Upon arrival they would detach the GPS and "hide" it leaving a big ring on the windshield. Along came the socially disadvantaged youths from broken homes whom did not have enough toys when they were little walking down the street looking for the big ring on the windshield.

Presto! Now the owner has to buy a new GPS and a side window.

My Garmin has a voice command function. I just say voice command and it responds, I then say go home and it loads up the trip home and displays it. For some reason I get a kick out of that Jetsons
    type technology..

Smokes pack tax in other states in the early 60s,like Fla. was higher an I didn't buy anything but high test gas ! Your cost may be right in Tenn, just not in Fla. All fun in any case. Now days I likely have too many 12volt plug in's hiding behind my seat, like tire mini airpump,a vac.,worklight, phone charger.

Brenda has several of the Garmin's at her Flower Shop, good for seasonal help when delivering in and around town.

I remember what a nightmare it was trying to navigate using the huge
city maps books, what a PITA trying to locate addresses. HRP

USB is the standard connector for charging devices like cel phones. Even the chargers you plug into a cigarette lighter often are just USB ports with removable USB cords. USB is also the standard connection for most devices connecting to a computer. It can't screw up other cars, what I meant was if somebody doesn't like the look of it on the dash, that's their problem, not mine.

in my 40 Ford, I used one the four holes on the bottom of the dash below where speaker grill would be, also have ign key, headlights, wiper switch....made a turned alum panel for a/c, cruise control, & heated seat switches. 1216141529.jpg

I am considering installing either a USB charger port or a plug into the seat riser in my A coupe. The fuse panel is under the seat and it would be easy to hook one up.

I have a voltage booster/ground converter connected to a plug-in power port in my 6v positive ground '40 Ford. It sits on top of the heater out of sight when not in use.

At the risk of being ostracized by you purists, I am hardwiring a GPS/ radio unit under my dash. If I was driving on 1965 highways, an old road map would suffice, but with these modern freeway interchanges, I need all the help I can get. When I purchased my Magellan suction cup GPS, it was supposed to have lifetime map upgrades but I haven't figured out how to get them off their website. With this cheap GPS/radio, I just have to purchase a new TF card and I'm done. With this stuffed under the dash between the steering column and the shifter, hopefully I'll be able to use it, and it won't be too noticeable to those of you peering in through my windows. Additionally, I'll have all those old rock and roll tunes that I can't get from the old AM radio.

  27. Well I don't own a GPS but I do smoke and they used to make a pretty cool map light that plugged into a cigarette lighter. I guess a map like a low tech GPS.

I saw my grandpa Highpockets set a Gulf folding map on fire trying to read it at night, didn't take long to get rid of it,it had been in the trunk and was saturated with grease and oil.

That was the first time I ever heard him cussin' and dancing around trying to stomp out the fire the maps started when he dropped it in the grass..

I learn how to cuss from my Granpa and my mom really enjoyed wasing my mouth out with soap. HRP
