It might be a complete ass, but it might also be just someone who doesn't like looking over a lot of "junk" from his home. I don't think I would either, much as I love old junk cars. Looking over my junk is not the same as having to look at yours.

I live in the country to avoid that, but I have a neighbor who has a junk pile that I have to look at if I go for a walk. I don't enjoy that - it ruins the scenery..

Exactly why living in the USA is so great. We do have a choice of how we want to live. I don't infringe on my neighbors and expect the same in return. Both my houses in KY and FL are in communities with HOA's to protect my investments. If I'm interested in viewing a junk yard I can always visit one.

I am on the ACC (Architectural Control Committee) in my subdivision. You cant change your house color, add a fence, cut down trees or add a sports court without my blessing. I got the posting because I failed to attend a meeting once:cool: . Rumor is I can be bribed with chrome bits and bourbon but that has never been proven (at least the chrome part).

Our CCR's are strict, no cars (drivable or not) outside the garages at night (slight leeway for visitors, short term). No cars parked on the street over night, no boats, no RVs in sight of other's property (one acre lots). No shops (pole buildings), no vehicle dismantling, no live stock, no sport courts or play structures between your house and the front of anyone else's house, no trampolines...you get the idea. All there to protect values and the peace.

I like the restrictions and keep in mind I have lived here under these rules for 10 years, rotisserie built 5 cars, turned and burned a few more and built my 34 roadster all within the rules (technically I don't have a shop, I have 3 garages all under the same roof as the house. 3 bays visible from the street, 2 bays turned around backward and 3 more bays across the courtyard screened by the 2 car garage). You have choices,
    1. Live where are there are no rules and do as you please.
    2. Live within the rules and comply.
    3. Learn the rules, manipulate them to your advantage and live the best of both worlds.

I like your choices and I like how you have adapted to the system. That being said, I couldn't live where there are rules like that. Somehow it doesn't seem very friendly, I can't imagine folks sitting on their porches at night sharing a cold one or kids playing in the yards. Still it works for you which is why I am glad we have options.

Funny, the neighbors are uber friendly. They know when there are cars in my driveway then a party is on and the bar is open and they just wonder in and join the fun. My fire pit is lit during the evening and parents can sneak a heater (cigarette) at my place and not get busted by the kiddies. On Halloween every year I hand out candy to the kids and we sample a different bourbon for the parents.

I guess it makes sense we all get along, we are voluntary inmates in our little sub-de-prison.

When Billy moved in, Bubba was heard to say "there goes the neighborhood"!

So, you are saying that I can move into your neighborhood and build a 8 stall "garage" IF the roofline is connected to main house and has a common wall. And, the "Committee" is not going to start throwing out things like "violates the spirit of the rules", "intent to circumvent rules", ad nauseam? My experience with HOA's, covenants, etc is that they are purposely vaguely written in order to be interpreted to the advantage of certain individuals by friends on the ruling body. The terms "technically" and "manipulate" in your post support that view. If your statement of the rules is a fair representation, I see numerous opportunities for favoritism but no more or less than most other HOA's. Just make sure you stay in good favor with the power elite. Not my cup of tea but completely understand how some people are comfortable with it.:)
