it is unlikely that the guy threw a chain over the limb of a sapling to pull an engine, but who knows? Hell, maybe he knew that he was leaving for 40 years. Did he go to the slammer? Hope he had plenty of smokes and grease!

Nope. Another way to visualize this. Let's say a branch is at 10' off the ground, and you prune it. That spot will forever be 10' off the ground. Or a V shaped split or crotch in a tree at 5' will always be at 5', that's why pruning early is important. Straight leader and all. A deer stand or tree fort stays at the same height.

So if you were to throw a rope around a branch, the branch would continue to grow longer or higher, but not at that spot. See the difference? If anything a rope around a branch might kill it. Girdling a tree trunk is an effective way to kill, though slow. Sometimes you'll see fencing or barbed wire embedded in the trunk.

Actually, it wasn't stock. It was more like 500 HP and that ain't no BS. It had 2-4's, Isky cam, 11:1's, fender well headers and big heads. Just a grocery getter. :D

  7. They all had 2x4's, 11 to 1 .
So it wasn't really a 425? Just threw that in?

I seen with my own eyes one of those surplus 45s when I was a kid. My friends Dad had it. Wanted $35 that I did not have. Only missing carb and genie !

Back in the 70's, a stock 69 Vdub beetle ran at Oswego dragstrip at 60 mph in just over 18 seconds. I know that one is true. LOL.

    I was nuts back then.

My old Hap Jones timing disc. The reason it's scratched, dented and oblong in the center was my decision to leave it on the end of my motorcycle crankshaft for a test ride after strobe timing. Not only did it depart at at about 8,000 rpm but became airborne, rotated 90 degrees and did a perfect horizontal flight directly in front of me. I was doing about 50, it had to have been doing over 100. Fortunately it made landing in a nearby field without chopping anyone's head off.

In Santa Cruz we have a road called Empire Grade. It runs from high in the mountains almost to the coast. That’s about 2600 feet of elevation gain in 15 miles. Or elevation loss if you’re going down hill.

When I moved here I heard of a mystery man who would suit up in full leathers and motorcycle helmet and ride a souped-up Flexi Flyer (like a steer-able snow sled, but with wheels. You lay on your belly on it and go head first) with disc brakes and pneumatic tires down the grade.

In the stories, he would successfully race sports cars down the grade at night.

  15. I've noticed that a lot of geezers (not me!) tend to tell the same story over and over for years. It seems as the years go by, the cars get faster, the girls hotter and the story teller tougher and meaner. Stands to reason that urban legends get more impressive with time.

  16. Legend and myth say that during WWII, people converted cars into trucks to get extra gas.
Ration stickers were issued to people, not vehicles. Your importance to the war effort determined how much gas you got, not what you drove. Truck drivers got more than the guy who worked at the hardware store, but ownership of a "truck" didn't make you a truck driver

TONY MARTINO, TODAY AT 9:24 AM!REPORT!

The crated Harleys at this auction in Tillsonburg On were selling at about $200 in 1970. There was a holy crap load of surplus My father went to auction. One of the crated Harleys was assembled and on display the following year at annual World of Wheels show in London On
Dad kept his hands in his pockets,,did not want another Harley although he had sold this one 15 years earlier IMG_2622.JPG

    http://www.vanzwamcs.com/greenpages/keys/ernie_simmons_auction/ernie_simmons_auction.htm

    from the article
Every once and a while Ernie sold an old car or a motorcycle, but most stuff he wanted to save until the days that people were willing to pay top-dollar! Ernie lived a modest life in rather poverty. People thought that Ernie had to be rich because of all the stuff he bought. Scumbags tried to rob Ernie and steal from him so he started to secure his grounds by placing booby traps: hundreds of fire arms were installed in the trees on his grounds and trip wires put in place. Signs told trespassers that they were likely to be shot. Anyway, some robbers took down some of his own guns and threatened him with these. But there was hardly any money on the farm. So they shot Ernie for persuading reasons, and left with only few dollars. Ernie was shot up and bleeding and left for dead. He succeeded in repairing his telephone and could call for help. After a long time in hospital he returned to the farm. He never completely recovered and finally died. As there were no heirs, the state officials rubbed their greedy hands and decided to auction the possessions and grounds of late Ernie Simmons.

I think it was supposed to be spelled LEDgend. You know, those new fangled legends that use less power and last a lot longer. Totally not traditional though.

  22. In the side yard of the old house on my parents farm . a young sycamore tree took root at the septic drain field. When I was about ten I could grab a branch and do chin ups. Today over 50 years later that same branch is 15 feet up in the air and about 6 inches in diameter. I know of a woven wire fence that was nailed to some trees. now years later that fence is still nailed to the trees but is several feet above the ground. When I had my hoist hung from the tree limb. I went from the main trunk out about 10 feet and then wrapped the chain around the limb. Its still there today grown into the tree.

  23. kingsford charcoal is made at Kingsford Ark. There was a place there where the vehicles forded the Kings River. And the plant makes charcoal from the leftover slabs from sawmilling timber. And the Charcoal plant was opened many years after the fords quit using wood in the body.

You need to read up on the history of Kingsford, started by Henry Ford and a guy named Kingsford outside their lumber mill in Iron mt Michigan.

Not disputing what’s going on now, but if you read the books on the life of Henry Ford, you will find that (1) Ford DID have parts shipped in crates specially made to use afterwards in the model T (2) the left over chips were converted into charcoal by a distant family member. ( 3) the charcoal was sold in the teens under the name “ Kingsford”. This all according to several books I have read on Henry Ford. I would guess they are accurate. Bones

  26. Straight from Kingsford's website:

The history of Kingsford Charcoal is a classic American story. It all starts in 1919 when Edward G. Kingsford helped Henry Ford procure a stretch of timberland to supply wood for his auto plants.

Mr. Ford wondered if all the wood waste generated by his sawmill and plants could be put to better use, and found his answer in a new process for pressing blocks of reconstituted char. While the innovative charcoal briquet was initially marketed under Ford’s own brand, it was eventually renamed Kingsford® Charcoal in Edward’s honor. The rest, as they say, is history.

Reading through this thread got me thinking of all the ridiculous stories that I have herd ....but the one about the new Cadillac for $500 reminded me of something that happened to me personally...it wasn't a new Cady it was 69 Olds Delta 98 4dr. HT. Used but looked like new sign said For Sale one owner low miles $500 cash I looked it over the car was like new even smelled new, probably because it had about 50 little tree air fresheners hanging in it only thing I saw that needed some attention was the front seat on the driver's side had faded but the rest of the interior was perfect.... I bought the car guy said all the paper work is in the glove box ...ok..drove straight to DMV started pulling papers out of the glove box found one said Death Certificate...so I looked it over and figured out it was for the guy that was the original owner looked a little further it read cause of death ..Heart a take ... location of where death took place it said front seat of his automobile and it went on to describe the 69 Olds and where it was parked at the time of death.....well that explains the air fresheners and the discoloration on the seat.... I investigated a little further found out the old guy was a real estate salesman and while showing a house he was waiting for the people to come and look at the house...well they found him dead in the front seat of his car... I just put a seat cover on the seat some new air fresheners and drove the car for about 3 years.....

I got one that actually happened. My dad bought a convertible filled up with concrete. Truck driver had a delivery near his house so he stopped by for lunch or maybe was just driving past. Caught his wife cheating and filled the convertible up with concrete. Legend has it he didn't have to pay for the concrete as everyone thought it was funny. I wouldnt have believed it except my dad isnt the story telling type, and my granddad did own a junk yard until 98.

  29. In '69, when I was a senior in high school, I used to lust after a '59 MGA hard top sitting in a yard next door to the school. Finally got the courage to walk over and ask if it was for sale. The lady who owned the house told me "no" that the car belongs to her son. Never told anyone else about it. About six months later, my younger brother came home from school and told me that he bought an MGA! Turns out that he went to the house and asked about the car and she said that her son was KIA in Vietnam and he could have the car for $75 bucks.

This was a running driving car that he drove home and was his daily driver for the next five or so years.

My second story takes place in a bar in the early '70s. I was talking "bikes" with a guy I met, and he told me that he had two Harleys he would take $100 for! I went and looked at them and it turned out to be two 80ci flathead from the late '30s. Took me a week to back with the money and by then they were gone...

Fast forward ten years and I'm sitting in another bar talking "bikes" and this fella says; "I bought two Harleys about ten years ago for $100 bucks...
I said: "were they behind a motel"? Yep, it was the two "flatties" I was after!

The dumbest Urban Legend is the gal who had a Corvette with "if you can beat me you can eat me" painted on it.

My crazy cousin decided to paint that years ago on her Pinto, unfortunately was outrun by Jeff Dahmer.
