[QUOTE The dragster that I have now when Mike Sforza built and raced it. I think NY national speedway staging lanes around 1967. QUOTE]

To me, this is a classic photo. I dig seeing the "Sunday at the strip" pics. I hope you don't
    mind me messing with it.

The last Hawiian dragster (a Don Long car) before Roland went funny car racing. Recently re-created from a matching chassis.

Belmont SanChez's Bantam competition coupe...one story is that the body originated on Jim Woods' lakes coupe, then went to Mickey Thompson's twin engine coupe, then to SanChez. The car would later go to the Koopman brothers while SanChez would take a Stude coupe he found on his father's used car lot and turn it into the famous Lakewood Muffler-sponsored Bonneville car

From the location of the hood scoop, I am guessing that this car has an inline 4 or 6, behind the nose cut from a belly tank. Norm Grudem photo from Pomona.

The caption is "Bernie Partridge," though I'm not sure. Bernie was the announcer at Bakersfield for years and later ran a Chevy-powered dragster with a liberally hole-sawed frame.

    Hello,

For those that were unable to see the famed, Speed Sport Roadster in action, here is a short film from 1960. Scrambling for the best spot along the chain link fence, these are some of the best shots I could film of the modified roadster in the timed runs early and the later eliminations. These were filmed at the 1960 Bakersfield Smokers March Meet, number 2. Most of the big names from the East and Midwest came out to race against the top racers from the West Coast.

In the eliminations, the Speed Sport Roadster looked unstoppable. They went up against the Hunter/Hill/Acala red roadster and the long awaited race against the record setting, Tony Waters’ purple modified roadster. The day ended with a win in the A/MR class.

This race day was the first long distance drive to another area racetrack for us. But, it was an eye opening day with all of the biggest names in drag racing showing up and putting on a fabulous show. Some of our local So Cal favorites had engine problems, but others did quite well. The FED of Cyr and Hopper was the Top Eliminator winner for this historic meet.

  18. Junji, Red won the A/MR class, but his day ended with a loss in the middle eliminator run off against Neil Leffler. Neil was a master at jumping the flag starters, as documented in your film of Neil against Bill Coburn at LIONS. He got the jump on Red and Red was not able to run him down, even though the Speed Sport had posted quicker times all day. (I was there too;))

Me too, standing on the fire truck at the lights....never forgot how stunned the crowd was to see Neil ahead of Red.

    Hey Guys,

Thanks for the reminder. Boy, did Neil Leffler roll the starting line against Jerry Card. I do not know why Leffler was not disqualified in that race.

Sorry, I did not get the Leffler/Loukas Coupe vs the Speed Sport Roadster race on film...It was late in the afternoon and I was probably dropping off to sleep on the chain link fence. I had to fight two older ladies and one guy to get that spot along the chain link fence. Some of my films were blocked by a blond blob of a hairdo. The day was long and the excitement probably wore me down as the day rolled on to the end.

It was a long 3+ hour drive for us and you guys. But, I would not have missed that Bakersfield March Meet for anything.

I think the movement many racing groups are following right now which is only drag racing cars from the 60's is growing more popular every year.

Groups like the Southern Gasser's Association have really hit on a great idea and for many of us this is what we remember drag racing being like back in those day's.

Something is just missing with today's drag racing and I find I watch it less all the time.

Maybe it's the lack of having more independent teams or something else but for me I would rather watch the shows groups like the Southern Gasser's are putting on.

    Just my opinion. Jimbo

  27. Could it be because the T/F cars all look the same, as do the Funny cars, and rarely do two of them make it down the track without blowing up?

Or that EVERY car pulls a wheelie even down into the lowest stock classes. In the day it was a real good car that constantly pulled the wheels.
