    Tariffs put in place by the Australian Government in the Teen's to help stimulate the local manufacturing of motor vehicles resulted in most auto manufacturers looking for loopholes in the rules and one of these was the reduced tariff that favored supply from other member countries of the British Commonwealth. General Motors - Holden's used their sister divisions in the UK & Canada to source a number of cars & trucks which avoided these fairly significant duties. Bedford Trucks from the UK were well known prior to the Great Depression and in 1935 GM-H added the Chevrolet Maple Leaf truck from Canada to****ist in growing their share of the commercial vehicle market against many wells established UK & European makes.
    General Motors however obviously had bigger growth plans and what better way could there be to win market share than to use another well established brand like Oldsmobile to swing customers across. By 1936 tariffs had reduced in Australia, world markets were recovering well from the depression, so the timing was right for GM Export in New York to co-ordinate the production of Oldsmobile Trucks for 1936.

    So as not to cannibalize the existing domestic US sales of the GMC Truck & Chevrolet Maple Leaf Trucks in Canada the Oldsmobile Truck's were restricted to export outside North America only. Oldsmobile trucks were built at the GMC plant in Pontiac, Michigan from 1935 (for the 1936 model year introduction) through to 1940 when commitments for WW2 took priority. They were produced as complete fully****embled units or CKD Kits (completely knocked down in boxes requiring total****embly on arrival at the destination country).

    The Oldsmobile Truck was effectively a clone of the GMC Truck with a different grille, badging and use of an Oldsmobile engine. There are some conflicting reports out there on the web indicating that the Olds Truck used a Chevrolet engine, but this is not the case. In fact just the opposite, GMC actually used the Olds 213 ci 6 cylinder in 1936 on the GMC T-14. A comparison of part numbers between Olds cars & trucks also reflects that the main components such as crankshaft, exhaust manifold bearing caps etc. are an exact match. There are differences in cylinder head, & engine block numbers but that may be a simple difference like a mounting hole positioned in a different location.

    In the introductory year of 1936 Olds trucks were offered here in 1½ & 2½ ton models with either 131 or 157 inch wheelbase. The options on bodies were 1/ Cab with flat platform tray (2" combing edge), 2/ Cab and platform with drop sides (hinged), 3/ Cab with tipper or 4/ Chassis with either cowl only or cab - for special purpose bodies such as bus, van etc.

    The styling used on the 1936 Olds Truck ran for just one year before being given a facelift for the 1937 model. The new 1937 styling then ran from through to the final Oldsmobile Truck in 1940.

    HJmaniac how did you embed that image directly into your post? I have been attempting to do so, to share a photo of my 56 Karrier Crew Cab COE as an example, but nothing I am attempting has panned out.

    Too bad... a very rare 1956 Karrier Crew Cab C.O.E. I picked up from northern Alberta; former garbage/refuse truck. Karrier is Dodge's joint ownership/production effort for C.O.E.s in the 50's. I had a few Brits from over there tell me "No such thing... " when I was corresponding looking for parts. Right about that same time I purchased an original advertisement brochure for my exact model from a fellow's sale of his uncles estate collection of rare vehicle ads. Since then I have also purchased a service manual from a British collector. And I have found some online photos in among Karrier/Commer fanatic websites although some have this same crew cab, none show same refuse model.

    The item previously of the other Brit manufacturer truck made me think some of you might enjoy seeing my actual COE style.

    I will keep trying to download some photos of it. Nifty beast complete with a funky factory roof rack.

    Mine lacks the middle window section and is fortunately in better condition overall and more complete.

    Just tried to cut and paste a second, different image from the web, but it ends up with same message:

    Some of these had a 4 cyl diesel and others 6 cyl gas Perkins.

    Wolfcreek I cannot see most images posted on this site. All I get is "yada,yada.yad.jpg" and when I attempt to open, left click on that link nothing happens, or right click "Error". It has been like that for some time now, several months. I am not that computer savvy, so I have no idea what the issue is. Thus my use of links for my own contributions.

    The sound of the****le makes me think it will be the same truck.

    So... just found another example of a Karrier "Gamecock" Crew Cab, this one a fire truck, so here is that link. This unit much nicer than mine condition-wise and of course a different box and minus the fire rigging and those style amber sidemarkers. Otherwise the same crew cab layup. Mine is a dark green with "patina".

    And yes, those split windows do crank open. The rear seat faces backwards. Seats and door paneling finish were a dang nice ostrich skin like leather!! Now destroyed by weathering and mice. But the cards will offer decent patterns. Also mine is LHD.

    I am not certain if I will ever restomod mine... I have the ongoing 47 Ford C.O.E. project I am still purchasing parts towards and a 49 Willy's Jeepster I am working on for my wife's retirement gift. But I sure am torn every time I see this beast... with roof rack it is a nifty truck from the get go... and roomier than the Ford.

    Okay... suspect that I just found the image you are suggesting Wolfcreek. Pretty much that is it yes, but the roof rack on mine is only a low single tier looking item with an overall more rounded construction... in keeping with the truck's appearance actually.

    BUT... more importantly not too far below the dual tipper image I found the same brochure cover as I have for my exact refuse model... (only brochure does not show any roof rack) so:

    Well that is an interesting idea.........my coupe has a flip out windshield, but I don't leave it open at highway speeds. Like a hurricane! With bugs!
    Great at lower speeds though...

  20. Love it! Only a true Autocar guy will notice that the little handle on the radiator access door is upside down, guess it works better for a coat hook that way:p
