Used to see a lot of rigs like this headed down I 44 from the St. Louis area toward Lake of the Ozarks when I lived west of STL.

Yes and I think that is Gene Tierney with him on the Meteor at the premiere of The Razor's Edge.

    Hey RM,

Nice capture of the Crown Point Vista House. When we were in the PNW on one of our many trips up there, that was our absolute, favorite place. It was amazing that we are so small in the whole view of things, nature. We took a fabulous drive, eastward from Portland, along the banks of the Columbia River. This is called the Vista House because of the views and location, high above the Columbia River. This is a must stop for anyone visiting this beautiful gorge and drive.

It was one of the highlights of the 105+ miles (straight through, 2 hours, but it took longer because of the many stops along the way.) out to the Maryhill Winery and Concert venue along the banks of the river. We took the other side of the Columbia River on the way back to Portland, another 105+ miles. What a great trip and memories.

We saw several hot rods and lots of older trucks along this highway. It looked like they were having a great time in this river side, green "foresty"drive. Whether they were Portland area locals or visiting hot rodders, they were having a wonderful drive as far as they were going. Even if it was to the Bonneville Dam or the myriad of waterfalls.

Here is an old thread that best explains the views and high winds:

    Hello,

When we were traveling in the Pacific Northwest, we took a drive out of Portland heading East on the Columbia River. It was going to be over a two hour drive with multiple stops along the way to the Maryhill Winery and Concert Venue. This was, needless to say, a very photogenic drive along the Columbia River. We saw several hot rods, trucks, and customs along the 100+ mile outward drive.

At the time, our only experience with the Columbia River was reading about those outrageous Coast Guard guys. They were famous for driving the virtually, unsinkable rescue boats on the Columbia River exit at the mouth of the Pacific Ocean. But this inland portion of the Columbia River was also fast moving as the current flows West at a rapid rate.

Crown Point Vista House on the Columbia River Highway (going east) at Corbett, OR

The Crown Point Vista House was impressive as it allowed a 360 degree view of the surroundings and a vertical drop, 180 degree view of the river and valley below. We were there early enough that only a few people were visiting. So, it was eerie and extremely quiet this high up on the valley cliff side. We are such small specks in the wonder of nature.

The Vista House is a museum at Crown Point in Multnomah County, Oregon.

It also serves as a memorial to Oregon pioneers and as a comfort station for travelers on the Historic Columbia River Highway. The views are…you will have to experience it to understand the beauty of nature. Sometimes it gets rather windy up there on the promontory outlook. Winds of 70-90 mph have been recorded. During those times, the site is closed to visitors.

Even if you do not see hot rods, trucks or customs driving along and stopping at the multiple waterfalls/viewing sites, the drive along the Columbia River inland is worth it. If you like the south side going out to the Maryhill Winery, then try the north side coming home, it gives another prospective on the fast flowing river valley.

ASIDE: It takes a lot of skill and local knowledge to sail a boat on the fast flowing, windy, river in certain areas. Kudos to those that can.
