Technical 354 Hemi Build Thread (Again)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by tartar_sammich, Aug 4, 2017.

  1. It's probably because it's distributor for a different application that has been adapted to use with this engine. It looks a little tall, but not so bad in person because you're just looking straight down at it.

  2. It's back to school tomorrow morning, so I'll post an open header video probably this Friday.

  4. Thanks. Not sure what it is about these mufflers, but the phone camera doesn't pick them up well at all. I may have been standing too close, but the video doesn't have the resonance that you get when you're standing right next to it.

I ran my engine with glasspacks and its bit loud for me. I like your mufflers.

  6. We tried to get some that were quiet enough so that we could hear any ticks or rattles, and so far there are none. For when it goes it the car, we might get something a little more aggressive, just to make it sound more like a hot rod [emoji57]

  7. Yea I'm not sure why it looks like that in the video, I just went out there and it's rock solid. Might be because the whole cart was kinda jumping around a little bit.

  8. Alright guys, I bought some 12" Cherry Bombs today just to see what they sounded like, you can tell a lot better how hard it hits now with these. Pretty close to open headers.

Sorry for the vertical videos, I forgot to flip the phone sideways.

LOL those new mufflers don't muffle worth a dam. Sounds good. :)

  10. So just in case anyone is interested, here is our solution for the alternator dilemma. At first, we had the Hot Heads high up alternator mount which we thought would work, but when we bolted a fender on there was some significant interference. To solve this, we bought two-grooved pulleys from HH and made our own passenger side low-mount bracket out of some scrap aluminum. The bracket also has a notch and the alternator can be moved in order to tension the belt. For the PS pump belt we had to get a little creative. Since the pump will not move, we made a bell crank which bolts to the water crossover and is moved back and forth by a Heim joint that is bolted to the timing cover. The only concern is the inlet on the water pump, but it should be OK because we have since made another bracket that moves the alternator down a little bit more.

    Looks good.
Hope you have enough belt contact on the P/S pulley.

  13. Me too, but there is a picture on the HH site of their power steering pulley and it has less wrap than ours does, so hopefully it'll be fine.

  14. Tell me about it. It was worth it though, I wasn't very fond of the high mount anyway.

  20. Hey y’all, just gonna give a little update on the car. A good amount has happened since my last post, but the main things were getting the car back from the painter and finishing the exhaust. Here’s some pics/videos:

Here’s the firewall now. Overall it looks decent, but there are a few places where it isn’t entirely straight. The good thing is that those few places are directly above the bell housing and will be covered up by this beast of a motor. We tried to get it as straight as we could, but this was the first firewall/sheetmetal we had ever done, so we’re pretty happy with the result.

Here’s a shot of the undercoating:
We were very tempted to go ahead and paint the whole car, mainly because this old lacquer paint has turned out to be quite fragile and chipped in a couple of places. However we quickly discovered that this was not in the budget, so we had them touch up a couple of spots and we’ll clay bar and buff the car once we get it all put together. One day it will get a nice slick paint job.

Here’s a video of the engine running with the full exhaust done. Don’t mind the wonky pipes at the back, we were trying different length mufflers and that screwed it up.

Pic from behind with the length fixed:

Here’s a shot of the final setup for the inlet/outlet for the cooling system:

That’s about it for the time being. Currently we’re working on making a torque arm as well as running the fuel, clutch, and brake lines, then we’ll get the frame powder-coated and put it back together.

  23. Little update. Here’s the torque arm we came up with, kind of tried to emulate what “flamedabone” used in his ‘40 Ford Build thread. Hopefully it works.

We have all of the fuel and brake lines ran, we have tested the fuel pump and there are no leaks, but we won’t know about the brakes until we get it all put together. Fingers crossed on that one. We are pretty much ready to take the frame apart and get everything coated, starting to get excited.

PS- Does anyone have a recommendation as far as caliper paint goes? We got these calipers a couple of years ago and have decided to paint them a less noticeable color (preferably black), but they are powder coated and in order to have that done again we would have to disassemble them, which we don’t really want to have to do.

  24. Got the frame back from the powder coater today. My brother and I get off school next week, then we’ll start final assembly.

Thanks for the insights to a collection of operations that generally go unnoticed...
That 3/8" 24 hole in the block exterior was NOT 1/8" pipe?

    loudbang and tartar_sammich like this.
  26. Correct, it was not a pipe thread.

  28. Man that's some crazy stuff you had to go thru with that water crossover thermostat housing and hoses.
Moving under its own power is a big milestone, congrats !!!

  29. Thanks! We’re stoked.
It was crazy for sure, but we all like it better than the hose crossover with the AN fittings, this one just goes more with the era and look we’re going for. The crazy doesn’t stop there though, we could’ve had this thing moving two weeks ago, but we had some tranny troubles. Somewhere between us and APT, FedEx dropped the transmission and broke the case, which delayed us getting it back by a few days. I guess it all worked out in the end, though.
