It did look like the most user friendly. How often do you replace the cutter and is it still available from snap on?

  2. Ive never replaced the cutter. Had mine for decades. I don't loan it out. You never turn the rig backwards when the cutter is engaged. The old guy at the auto parts machine shop used one and showed me how good they work. So I bought a new one. He claimed the cutter could be sharpened?

If you're not pulling the pistons for new rings, no reason to remove the ridge.

WTF, just my opinion, but you’ve done all the hard work ie pulling the heads, intake, pan and have cleaned it all up. That’s the hard part, the easy part is pulling the pistons out and reringing it at this point. With the amount of metal that has been removed to form that Ridge ream is about the same that has been removed from the rings. They have substantial wear. This would be the easiest time to fix it, may be able to reuse the bearings, or not, but I would replace the rings. Just my 2 cents, Bones

Rings are cheap, so replace them. And give it a quick hone too.

Bearings are expensive, so reuse them if they check out OK (with plastigage).

I have a clayborn engine stand. Can you start a engine on these? 20180514_141411.jpg 20180514_141402.jpg

  10. Looks like you can start it in that stand, not to long with no cooling. That funny thing under the engine is useless, send it over here :D:eek:

  13. Short run if you have oil pressure. Probably will smoke from your pre-lube so that smoke does,nt count. Have you seen the youtube vid Mart posted a while back with one head removed on his running flathead ?

First everyone advised him to just clean it up and run it, then it escalated to removing the ridge, now we are re-ringing it! When you pulled the heads you just sealed your fate. LOL. And STP was a miracle lubricant. Just not in cold weather or short hops. :D

You can start them on a couple of tires so why not that stand.

I have a Blackhawk ridge reamer that I've had for 50 years. Never had to re-sharpen it. DO NOT over tighten yours or you'll be over boring like you wouldn't believe. Like Old Wolf said, never turn one backwards. You know my phone number and where I live. I'm thinking about building a test stand, it's not like I don't have the time and material to do it. Call me if there's anything else you need I might have. Alan
