Guess I should fully read the post, didn't even see the part about the flanges you started with. Haha

For a first time ever effort they may work.

Looks good! You don't know mental pain until you build a set of headers.

    This is the "easy" side.

We cut the flange and it goes on and off without a slip joint.

Considering I've never done this before, I'm pretty happy. Finish these up and the last big thing is the pedals. IMG_20180326_231231.jpg

  12. Nice effort, my friend.
However though, you're gonna have a mess on your hands on a dirty, dusty pit road with those collectors pointing straight down. You might want to consider making some 90 deg. , or maybe 80 deg, I guess, bends, and splice them in right below where the tubes end.
Your pit neighbors will thank you, too.;)

    Roger that.
I had a similar set of custom headers built for my sbc tube framed OT car.
You become unpopular real quick and you also find out that the dust will enter EVERY little opening into the interior.

For all you fender well header builders , Speedway sells a 80 degree slip on extention that puts the pipes out at a perfect angle for pipes. Used them on my last fender well header set. Then used their auger mufflers inside the 3 inch pipes. Sorry for hijacking your thread. 0520131953a.jpg

Thank you. They aren't finished yet. Since it will be run on the street also we will also have to run pipes back for mufflers.

Love the car. Great job on the headers. Yep the ex flange angle makes that a challenge to say the least. Gonna be a nice car.

Nice job on the headers, especially for the first time! Boy, you shoulda seen my first set - uggg - ly. And I picked the worst car, a friends 409 powered '55 Chevy.
I always start with the hard side, then try to make the other side match as close as is practical.
The car sure is coming along nicely.

Yeah, they don't match but having to go under the steering column it never was going to.

How much did the augers quiet down the exhaust vs open headers? Sorry for the double hijack.

wvenfield, your Pontiac gasser is looking good, and great job on those headers. I can't wait for the mental pain that Mike Colemire speaks of. Buying a TIG welder soon and headers are going to be one of my first projects.

The auger mufflers are really good because at normal cruising the sound like an original Cobra with side exhaust or a factory side pipe Corvette. In my Morris I could carry on normal conversation with the windows down at road speed.
Wide open they sound awesome and don't hurt performance. The other bonus is one they only weigh about a pound or so and they give a straight pipe look and still have mufflers.

Just thought I would throw this out there. I have this louvered hood. I'm going to do a tilt front and I will use this if it's what I have but if anyone was interested, I would trade it for a standard hood. I'm not going to mess with any kind of shipping. Currently in primer.

So, I'm looking to have perhaps a little art project done. (More on that if I get it done.) Needing pics......so I'm spamming my thread with pics.

But first.....off topic isn't really off topic when it is perhaps on topic.

    On to the pics.

I never pass up a 55 Pontiac gasser thread but yours is a real treat.
On the taper question. The boys here reminded me before I got stressed out over my 32 spindles and reamer cost. Heat it up. I cut apart a old ball joint and hammered it carefully into the heated orange spindle end from the new side being sure to stop before running out of taper. It was pretty easy if you stay calm and don’t get scared that it’s your steering your toying with.

That's the solutions I like.......the ones that don't cost anything.

Headers look good, but wait till you run into a dusty road!
