    Hello,

Back in 1995 and 1999, we took a long July road trip from So Cal to the Pacific Northwest...and back. In 1999, instead of a straight through drive, back on the I-5, we decided to go inland Oregon, Northern Cal, Tahoe, down the eastern side of California, across the desert to Tonopah and winding up in Las Vegas.

We don’t know why, as we actually hate Las Vegas, but were interested in the old (New then) Hyatt Lake Las Vegas Resort located 20 miles away from downtown Las Vegas. The big, man-made lake, sailing/boating, shopping, desert, close to Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, and being super quiet, etc. (except for the howling. whistling wind through the tall glass doors in the huge view room.)

We had made the long back roads trip from Ashland, Oregon and a birthplace near Klamath Falls. The Highway 395 was fairly empty and the drive was pretty nice, but tiring. We took a side trip to Reno, because we had never been there before. Our sleepover was supposed to be in Lake Tahoe, but ended up in Reno.

Much to our surprise, the city was getting prepped for HOT AUGUST NIGHTS event that looked to be a nice hot rod event. It is called Hot August Nights for several reasons.
    1. The hot cars in attendance
    2. The extremely hot weather.

In late July, it was hotter than anywhere else we had traveled so far. We were told that in the first weeks of August, the heat is almost unbearable. Our A/C was a wonder and lifesaver.

The surrounding country side offers some nice driving/photography areas, but the heat sort of ruins it for most. As we were looking around the city, it was pleasant, but, we wouldn’t want to live there. For the big hot rod event, visiting it might be bearable for us. As far as photography goes, the city and neighboring areas are ripe for quality photo backgrounds for a hot rod or custom car/wagon.

We always told ourselves that one day we will get back to this Hot August Nights show, despite the weather. (It is usually mid to high 90s with some days over 100) Afterall, it is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) hot rod events in the western portion of the USA.

If you go, a must photo is from the upper levels of the parking garage near the famous Reno Arch sign. Make sure the hot rods are below showing the sign. (from the garage, you are facing the arch, red taillights, etc. ) A possible time exposure at night would look rather cool. It would be a rare shot as no other photo of that nature has been posted on the internet. So far.

This year: August 3rd to August 12

    FUTURE HOT AUGUST NIGHTS DATES
    2019: August 6 – August 11
    2020: August 4 – August 9
    2021: August 3 – August 8
    2022: August 2 – August 7
