Thanks for the history on these cars I'm always interested in the back stories and who the guys were after all, to me they were the pioneers of hot rodding. I love the third picture as it looks like the guy leaning over the motor is smoking. Great thing to be doing over open carbs.

I just found this photo collection, on the Smoker's site...M. Shannon recently contacted us with an offer to share some photos from Famoso in the 50’s. He writes “I attended many Smokers races during 1955-56-57 while I was in high school at East Bakersfield High. I have several photos of the drags during that period. (Also I worked there many times writing the speeds on the board below the timing stand as people made runs before eliminations and also during eliminations I sometimes was assigned to wear headphones and stand down at the finish line and call out the winner as either pit lane or spectator lane. We knew Bernie Mather and he got my friend and I the jobs there on those Sundays.”
Here are some of the photos:

Waters and Murray (not Tony Waters, he's below), 555 with big stroked Chevy...later went to Texas

Tony Waters, when he still ran a fuel GMC

This might have been Jack Ewell's fuel coupe

  22. Bottom photo is L.C. Kirby's blown Cad powered Bandini. He took the A/MS record from Sam Parriott.

    Hey Knuck,
Nice photos of a 40 Willys coupe. It sure looks like our old 40 Willys, simple, early hot rod, black wheels well before its time, and the shiny stuff that stood out everywhere in contrast. But, the headers are in a different place. Ours was underneath the frame, going out toward the rear.

Wow, look at the wide open spaces in the photo... nice...

This photo could have been somewhere in in California, like: Inyokern, early Santa Ana or Bakersfield...

It was planned for the future, but, we never ventured to Texas or outside of So Cal...aaawww. Photos of our 40 Willys are still missing from March to August 1960 at Lions Dragstrip in the pits or in action.

Really like the 40 Willys ditto what jnaki said. Ray Kobel's C/G Willys was like that, he drove it to work as a stocker in Socal then brought it back to NY and raced it. In the mid 60's.

    Hey 34,
That is a nice yellow 40 Willys. If we had made it past August 1960, our finished 40 Willys was slated to be painted yellow. (Would have raced in C/Gas against him? That would have been something, two yellow C/Gas Willys Coupes racing side by side...) We had scheduled black tuck/roll inside, and the sponsor lettering (Olympic Auto Parts)on the side of the doors, while Reath Automotive was going to be on the trunk lid.

Olympic was just down the street from our house and were the first to say they would give us almost free parts/supplies. They even offered a wholesale number and their lower costs for special orders. Reath had done motor work, 671 rebuild, supplied speed parts, heads, pistons, rods, etc.

The paint, upholstery, new Halibrands, M&H, and two port Hilborns were already penciled in for the following week pick up and installation. Our dad said he would have the B&M installed a week later, wow! But as things go...it ended in August. No U.S. Detroit Nationals for us in September. All cancellations by phone and in person.

I was a 12 yr old kid hanging out at the garage and these guys were like my big brothers. I'm one of the last around, I miss them a lot. They all taught me something that carries on today with me. I built a 40 willys coupe in 72 all steel and with the stainless trim and painted it yellow also. I never meant it as a copy of Rays but it must have been in the back of my mind somewhere.

Not knowing the full class requirements but I'm guessing the hood on the Bandini was the outcome of getting bounced at tech the previous race (as shown in earlier shots).

  30. Yes, the makeshift hood, and the crude collectors were probably added to keep the car somewhat within the rules. What about headlights? The rules enforcement appears to have been a bit lax in Texas where the car ran.
