We are taking a family vacation in Washington state near Seattle/Tacoma area. Anyone have some hotrod related recommendations?
Not hot rod related but be sure to see the Olympic Peninsula and the Ho (I think the is the correct spelling) Forest if you enjoy big trees and scenery. The trees are as tall as the redwoods in California (but not as big around). Charlie Stephens
There’s two “LeMay” collections. One is “America’s Car Museum” next to the Tacoma Dome, as Steve mentioned. The other is the original location at the MaryMount Academy. That’s run by the family. It’s a long story I won’t go into, but that one is the one a HAMB guy wants to see. Building after building of restored and unrestored cars. Some parked so tight you can’t walk between them. But I’m biased, I’m a local who does know the story. Don’t get me wrong, both are worth the trip. https://www.lemaymarymount.org/
Do a drive by the Boeing factory and see what a big workshop looks like. It is on the route to the Whitby Island Ferry Pier. My favourite area is Gig Harbor very picturesque. There was a small family owned old car museum in that area I visited years ago, they collected famous peoples car, a lot of which were owned by movie stars and the like.
If you’re going to Mary Mount @ rawcje19 here’s a few pictures from inside the buildings. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
If you're interested in touristy stuff, don't miss the Johnson Ridge Observatory at Mt. St Helens. It's about 100 miles south of Seattle via Castle Rock and Toutle, but well worth the trip and the $8 admission....
There's also Walt Austin's collection of primarily drag race cars in Tacoma. The Boeing Tour in Everett, along with the 2 plane museums located at Paine Field/Snohomish County Airport, Future of Flight and Paul Allen's plane and war machine collections. Boeing in Seattle at King County Airport/Boeing Field, and the plane museum there. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Thanks a lot. We are heading to mount st Helen today. Went to pike market. That was cool. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Second the suggestion of visiting Gig Harbor. I grew up there in the late 50's when it was a commercial fishing center. Now it is a tourist friendly place with tremendous views of Mt. Rainier. Kids should love the Marina park in downtown.
Fircrest Car Show 7/8 (Sunday) ...U.P/Tacoma area...free to walk around... lots of neat rides show up for it.
Avoid Pike's Market unless you like crowds, large crowds. Not car related but the Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum even impressed my son who is rarely impressed by anything. https://www.chihulygardenandglass.com
the Hydroplane Museum in Kent is pretty cool, lots of vintage go fast on the water stuff for a small museum
Here’s a few pictures I took while I was there on June 3rd. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The big problem with seeing stuff in Washington State is you have to do some serious planning because things are spread out quite a ways apart at times. St Helens takes at least a day. If you run down to Westport or Ocean shores for the kids to go out on the ocean beach that is a long day if you don't stay over night. I highly recommend spending a day at the ocean and watching the sunset though. Between Tacoma and Everett the traffic can cause what looks like a 90 minute run to be a three hour run. I'm thinking LeMay's collection at Mary Mount is only open on special occasions but may be wrong. At any rate there is plenty to do, plenty to see and some great places just to kick back, sip your favorite beverage and watch the day go by.
Here’s the link to Marymount LeMay. Open 6 days a week, generally. Hours vary. https://www.lemaymarymount.org/ Damn, this thread reminds me of all the place close to me I haven’t been to in too long.
Thanks again. Man we are loving the weather, 96 and humid when we left Illinois. Did Mount St. Helens and stopped at Olympia on the way back today. Walked the boardwalk and tumwater falls. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Went to lemay marymount. Wow! Well worth going. You locals should see if you can go through the timber. They said that Doug the owner will sell stuff. We also went to the museum of glass in Tacoma. Cool as well Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
I highly recommend the Museum of Flight. They have amongst other things in their huge collection a full-size Space Shuttle mockup, the first 727, 737, 747, Concorde, B17, B29, etc. You can spend all day there. http://www.museumofflight.org/
We should have planned another week. Went to the car show today. Very nice rides. Much different varieties than at home. We are going to get my daughters senior pictures taken this afternoon. Going to catch a ferry tomorrow and go to hoh rain forest. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
. Talked to this gentleman outside of Lemay museum. Very cool setup! Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
