I was wondering if he has longer plugs in it? Maybe needs short ones.

  2. Guess that depends on his heads and how hard it is to turn with the plugs in depends on compression.

Don't hook up the plug wires and see how it cranks with the plugs in.

I wonder if there is a balancer/timing mark mismatch? That could throw the timing off quite a few degrees as chevy used at least 3 different timing mark indicators over the years.

Too much initial could cause it to turn over slowly, or even kick back and break the starter but OP mentioned it takes 126 ft./lbs. to turn crank manually with plugs installed.
Sounds like cam may be installed way advanced.

Yellow spark will not fire today's gas,you need a white or blue spark and check the amp draw on the starter, and is it big enough starter.
I bought a real clean 65 C10 that some one put a BBC in and it would not start when hot. No. Cause asmall starter was used and not enough Amp.hrs. In the battery. Changed both and it would always hot start after that.

The original poster @Trace jarvis hasn't been back on since Wednesday afternoon.

Will he be back to follow up with all of the advice given? Who knows....

I hope so. This is interesting and I would like to know. I feel for his aggravation but I like to learn or be reminded of potential causes.

if he has done 50 he should check the simple things first as suggested if he really has done 50 the battery as suggested should be load tested first off.again if he has done 50 I would think he covered all other things timing etc.should be second nature if truly built 50.before flaming think about how many have built 50 and have not gone through everything suggested.in the sixties I built my first engine same type problem.my girlfriend now wife kept telling us it was battery we knew better ha ha after 2 days we put in new battery low and behold it cranked and fired.she reminded me for years:):)between race car engines and street I have probably buttoned up 30-40 small blocks not an expert but

@54vicky I was thinking along those same lines after reading some of the O/P's posts. Anyone that has "done over 50 of these in the past" should be able to zero in on the issue pretty quickly.

It's what I felt when he first posted. There was just something about his post that didn't feel right. He did 50 yet he was working on this one for 2 & 1/2 months. Suggestions were made on what to test and he comes back shortly after saying he tried everything and He still needed help. I hate to be so skeptical, but, there have been a lot of posts where guys have been getting scammed here and this just seemed strange. His writing and spelling was a lot like some Nigerian fellow trying to scam for a cut from his million dollar lottery winnings...

  18. I say let's don't rush to judgment. While it does seem strange that he hasn't responded further, we have no way of knowing what is taking place. Maybe he fell ill. Maybe he had a vacation sked for this time. Maybe he had a family emergency. Perhaps he found someone in his area to give him a hand. It cud be anything. Did anyone attempt to call him? He provided a phone number. He has a valid address where he sez he lives and the area code he gave with his phone number is correct for that area. The HAMB has done what it does best, i.e., come to the aid of someone having an automotive dilemma with sound advice and that's not easy to do from a distance. All of you shud pat yourselves on the back for your willingness to help a perfect stranger and feel good that you gave it your best shot.

I am not that far away, Manitowoc WI, tried to call and left a message and got no response.
Funny thing is the guy recording the message didn't answer it with the name Trace. o_O

Try it out and see if you can hear the name, I could not make it out.

  20. Man, I'll tell you how "it used to be". It used to be people didn't think they were owed something and were grateful for the help they got. You've got a shitload of guys here trying to help you, some have sent you private messages and others have tried to call you. You haven't shown the courtesy of even returning to this thread with an update. You've built 50 of these, my ass.

Hell, maybe I'm being too hard on you but I don't like whining, especially when you have so many of these good folks trying to help you.

Oh well, threads like these give us something to do while waiting on updates from Squirrel's Barracuda and Hotrodmnm's Edsel threads ( as well as all the other interesting threads) ;)

  27. Come on guys, you know some people are not tethered to the hamb all day long. A new guy probably won't be interacting with every post on here. Besides, there are other posts to read if he doesn't come back.

I think he just wanted someone to work on his car for FREE. Same thing happened in the Ford Club,
A new member would come along..... First thing was, can someone come over this week-end, and help
me put on new brakes. Then they'ed call another member to help build a early transmission, and so on.
Didn't take us long to figure out what was happening, all new members were put on probation after that.
Another reason they would join, was to get into everyones part stashes.....

  29. Read the title of the thread.................the dude's lost.

I think we need more info on the rotating assembly, especially the pistons. He never said but I am wondering if this a re-ring instead of a fresh bore with new pistons. I have a hunch that this is a re-ring job and that the old pistons never had the carbon removed from the rings grooves. If that is the case the pistons will be free at the top where there is taper-wear in the block, but will be extremely tight in the lower portion of the cylinder where there is minimal wear. If this is the problem, pulling all the pistons, cleaning the carbon from the ring grooves, installing rings and re-assembling will fix the problem. Again just a hunch!
