Hot Rods Tire wheel sizes.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Groucho, Aug 29, 2018.

  1. I like the way this Nomad looks and am looking to do same on my 59 Bel Air. So, big/little? On tires? Or both rim and tire? Or all same frnt/rear? Also, rim tire sizes?? Radials. THX

Wider by an inch in the rear will always get my vote.

Factory station wagon wheels were wider by an 1" or so and had more front spacing...looked a bit more like a 'reversed wheel' but retained correct geometry. Both 14" and 15" were used depending on year model. Finding the real thing may be a little more difficult these days, but stuff from the '20s, '30s and '40s is still out there.

staying with painted steel wheels? 15x7 (reversed?) should work with slightly taller rear tire

  6. I'm not trying to improve the look as much as have a couple different combos (including what's on there) to switch back and forth periodically.

Fine looking car, I like a wider wheel in the rear, reversed for the deep look and taller wider tire than the front.
IMHO 15” wheels may soon go to the wayside like 14”s did. Not a lot of tires available for 14” these days.

6'' pre-'64 Chevy station wagon wheels, 2.25/70 x 14 rear, 195/60 x 14 front, all in black … several sets of little caps, '63s being extra good looking.

Why "pre '64?"........As I recall from association (back in the day) with a '64 Chevy wagon, it had the wider 14" wheels which I think were shared with '61 thru '64. Just curious about your comment...... '65 models got 15".......in all cases here, I refer to full size Chevys

Ray, the '65 up vehicles had to add the safety bead which was mandated that year on pass. car wheels. Instead of just rolling it into the existing pattern, the rim was totally redesigned. The result ruined the look of wagon wheels.
